About the role

Under direct supervision of the Facility Cafeteria Supervisor, Principal Facility Cafeteria Supervisor or Food Services Field Supervisor, the Food Service Worker II performs duties in the preparation and service of food at a Port Authority Cafeteria. Work is performed according to established procedures and methods. This position is responsible for duties involving the preparation and service of food at the facility location assigned or at other locations as directed by department management.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and service of food, including checking and participating in work to ensure food is prepared in proper quantity, quality, appearance and by use of proper methods
  • Food preparation work includes preparing fruits and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, hot meats, vegetables, desserts, and hot & cold beverages
  • Washing, peeling, cutting, and seeding fruits and vegetables
  • Maintaining temperatures and chemical levels as outlined by provided standards
  • Performing sales transactions in a timely fashion, entering all sales into cash register to ensure purchases are accurately recorded, making change, accepting other acceptable forms of payment, issuing receipts to customers, observing customers’ purchases in the café line and differentiating between standard options
  • Responsible for all assigned change funds and cash receipts ensuring that cash drawer follows overage and shortage standards
  • Ensuring compliance with company service standards and inventory and cash control procedures
  • Preparing high-quality food items according to standardized recipe and instructions to meet production, delivery, service schedules and temperature/portion control standards
  • Storing food and supplies in designated areas and containers following standard wrapping, dating, food safety and rotation procedures (dates, labels, rotates stock according to procedures as indicated by oldest product being utilized first) and according to National Restaurant Association guidelines as indicated non-soilage of food
  • Estimating and listing food items needed
  • Assisting with loading or unloading and delivering supplies and products
  • Replenishing condiments, coffee, other beverages, and general supplies
  • Setting up tables prior to serving time and ensuring proper settings
  • Taking orders from customers and preparing items requiring short preparation
  • Completing orders from steam tables and serving customers at multiple stations
  • Ensuring that orders are picked up at once, serviced quickly, quietly, and efficiently
  • Serving customers in an efficient and friendly manner following established steps of service and meeting outlined standards
  • Cleaning, sanitizing and maintaining all assigned work areas, stockroom, counters, food stations, food preparation equipment, serving equipment, dining room equipment, utensils, pots, pans, dishes, glasses to ensure sanitation standards including both manual washing and operating mechanical dishwashing machinery
  • Reporting needed maintenance or repairs of equipment used
  • Assisting in record keeping and reporting as required
  • Removing waste, trash, garbage and cleaning containers used for this purpose
  • Maintaining good working relationship with coworkers, customers, administration, and managers
  • Resolving customer concerns and reporting relevant information and concerns to supervision
  • Performing job safely while maintaining a clean, safe work environment
  • Performing related work/duties as required by department management

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in preparation and service of food including cooking in industrial type cafeteria operation
  • Ability to stand continuously and work in hot and humid conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment

Selection Process

All qualified candidates will participate in an oral exam. The oral exam will measure candidates’ abilities in such areas as: Situational Judgment, Problem Sensitivity, Flexibility, Decision Making, Customer Service, Interpersonal Skills, and Oral Communication. The interview will also have a brief physical component that requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to lift objects from the ground weighing up to 50 lbs.

Starting hourly rate for Food Service Worker II position is $16.17 an hour (subject to TWU collective bargaining agreement).
