This position is located at NAS JRB New Orleans Bowling and is open to current NAS JRB New Orleans MWR employees and those with military spousal preference only.

About the role

Incumbent performs semi-skilled and routine food service tasks in support of the Galley Program. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of manual tasks in food preparation in food service areas that require light to moderate physical effort.

Duties

  • Perform duties as a short order grill cook and/or assist the cook in the preparation of lunch or dinner meals.
  • Perform a limited variety of tasks, such as grilling foods to order (e.g., hamburgers, pancakes, bacon, eggs).
  • Select food items to be served and ensure their freshness.
  • Take direct customer orders or ticket orders from waitstaff, ensuring items are cooked to order, served using authorized portion controls and proper temperature, and turned to avoid burning.
  • Assist in or prepare simple items such as sandwiches, soups, and salads.
  • Measure and weigh ingredients according to simple recipes or as directed.
  • Place cooked food on serving dishes, steam tables, or food carts.
  • Ensure group orders are served simultaneously.
  • Maintain grills, stoves, refrigerators, and working areas in a neat and clean manner in accordance with safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Notify supervisors of items needed to maintain stock.
  • May assist in taking inventory.
  • May collect money, operate a cash register, and prepare documentation for cash fund accountability.
  • May occasionally perform other duties within the facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successfully complete a background investigation using fingerprint identification and background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • Must go through Personal Identity Verification (PIV) requiring two forms of identification from the Form I-9.
  • May be required to pass pre-employment examinations.
  • A valid State driver’s license is required to operate motor vehicles.
  • Must have salary sent to a financial institution of choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Incumbent will be exposed to extreme temperatures and possible cuts, bruises, burns, spills, and falls.
  • Requires sitting, walking, long periods of standing, bending, and lifting moderate to heavy items up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be C.A.R.E (Controlling Alcohol Risks Effectively) trained, hold an Emergency First Responder (EFR) or CPR First Aid certification, and hold a current Food Handler certification OR obtain these within 90 days.
  • Irregular working hours may be required, including early shifts, late shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties described. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to read and follow simple recipes, instructions, and combine ingredients for cooked dishes.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in cash handling and ability to operate a computerized cash register.
  • Must pass an annual physical examination, obtain a health care card, and pass the Food Handler’s Sanitation Course.
  • Knowledge of food characteristics to determine freshness and adequate serving temperatures.
  • Ability to operate food preparation appliances (e.g., food slicer, blender, grill, fryer).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs.

Pay

$18.89 - $22.04 per hour

Schedule

Part-time - 20-34 hours per week
