Food Service Worker

About the role

The Food Service Worker performs routine general service tasks in the kitchen, dining room, dish room, and other assigned areas in accordance with Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) policies, procedures, and federal, state, and local regulations. This role ensures the provision of necessary equipment and supplies while maintaining sanitation of all service areas and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains courteous, professional relationships with staff, patients, families, and guests.
  • Sets up and dismantles assigned workstations, including hot food, cold food, salad bar, and coffee station.
  • Stocks and replenishes condiment areas, paper and china supplies, beverage machines, and brews coffee.
  • Operates, cleans, and dismantles the dish machine.
  • Maintains merchandising in service areas and replenishes vending machines.
  • Stores food following wrapping, dating, food safety, storage, and rotation procedures.
  • Performs continuous cleanup of work areas, equipment, and utensils.
  • Works on the serving line, in the dish room (scrapping trays, loading/unloading dish machine, sorting silverware) as needed.
  • Cleans tables, counters, kitchen equipment, and sweeps/mops floors.
  • Assists with catering events when necessary.
  • Handles waste disposal and transports it to the appropriate area.
  • Follows Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) guidelines and adheres to sanitation procedures.
  • Complies with OSHA regulations and other safety standards.
  • Adapts activities to meet specific guest needs.
  • Adheres to company policies, standards of operation, and the Employee Handbook.
  • Maintains records and documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • May perform other duties within the department with proper instruction and training.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current City of Norfolk food handling training required at time of hire.
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior food service experience preferred.
  • Excellent time management skills to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Able to shift priorities, work independently, and collaborate in a team setting.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, and takes initiative.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals, team members, management, and customers.
  • For roles in the Children’s Pavilion: FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services registry search required.

Working Conditions

Works in a noisy and distracting kitchen/food service environment with regular exposure to cold and hot temperatures (e.g., ovens, freezers). Often exposed to hazardous situations that may result in cuts or minor burns.
