Overview

Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of preparation service, clean‑up and related duties of routine difficulty at a volume food service installation on an assigned shift; and performs related work as required. This entry‑working class position in the Food Service sub‑series involves routine duties in preparing and serving food at an institutional kitchen, cafeteria, dining room, ward or other area and in cleaning food service areas, equipment and utensils. Work is initially performed under close supervision but, as knowledge and experience are gained, supervision becomes less close.

Responsibilities

• Wash pots, pans, dishes and utensils; assist in cleaning food service areas such as ovens, refrigerators, and grills.
• Assist cooks, bakers, meat cutters and others by fetching, lifting, carrying, and performing other unskilled tasks.
• Set up service‑dining area: clean and fill showcases with ice, maintain steam tables, place food containers, display plated foods, make and fill coffee, tea, juice and water urns.
• Prepare trays for patients receiving special diets according to written orders specifying weights and amounts of foods.
• Portion ingredients in the pantry per written instructions; bag and place ingredients on carts for pick‑up by cooks.
• Perform simple food preparation tasks such as beating toppings, grating cheese, slicing fruits, pureeing, toasting bread, boiling or frying eggs, and grilling bacon or hamburgers.
• Serve food on the line and replenish items as needed.
• Assist storekeeping personnel with receipt, storage and rotation of food stores.
• Deliver food on food‑service tractors and trucks to satellite cafeterias and wards.
