Food Service Deli Clerk

The Deli/Bakery Clerk is responsible for keeping all food service cases stocked and clean during business hours. They are required to assist customers as needed and maintain a friendly, energetic demeanor while adhering to all procedural guidelines set by the Food Service Department.
Responsibilities
- Ensures cleanliness of deli/bakery cases, storage area, and work area for safety; includes cleaning shelves, products, floors, and removing hazardous debris.
- Stocks deli/bakery cases; includes presentation, facing, filling, and organization of products as per department schematics, ensuring tag and pricing accuracy.
- Examines rotation of all deli/bakery products, discarding expired or spoiled items.
- Assists customers with purchases, information, and product selection; includes selling and cross-selling products.
- Receives, inspects, and logs products for accuracy of shipment, temperature, and quality.
- Monitors point-of-purchase signs, recipe cards, product coupons, promotional material, and information on complementary foods.
- Operates equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
- Prepares various deli/bakery items using appropriate ingredients and proper cooking times.
- Uses knowledge of scales and weight measures to accurately weigh and label products.
- Participates in pre-inventory preparation, including back stock and ensuring tags match products.
- Sustains a high level of product knowledge and preparation.
- Walks department regularly to ensure an organized, sanitary, and clean appearance at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency degree.
- Preferred 1–2 years of grocery retail experience in Food Service department processes and procedures.
- Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.
- Must maintain the highest level of customer service at all times.
- Ability to adapt to a high-volume retail environment while working in a cross-functional team.
- Capacity to take initiative when problems arise.
- Flexibility to adapt in a variety of situations.
- Advanced attention to detail with the capability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills for working with peers and senior management.
- Ability to multitask and strong organizational skills.
- Must be able to lead, support, and contribute to team goals.
- Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.
- Familiarity with Health Department guidelines and regulations in a grocery retail environment.
- Basic knowledge of math, weights, and measures.
- Skills working with food service equipment such as knives, slicers, scales, and ovens.
- Capability to cut and weigh various amounts of meats, salads, and cheeses.

Pay
This job generally starts between $14.50 and $16.00 per hour. The actual rate offered will meet or surpass the legal wage requirement for the job's location.
