Food Service Assistant - San Damiano, White Post, VA
About the Role
The Food Service Assistant provides support to ensure that food quality standards and guests' expectations are met at the San Damiano Spiritual Life Center in White Post, VA. The Center is committed to the spiritual development of the Diocesan community through guided and directed prayer experiences, spirituality programs, evenings of theological reflection, and retreats. It strives to build a dynamic community of faith, hope, and love wherein the mind and heart of Jesus are revealed more fully in the hearts, actions, and worship of all who celebrate God's sanctifying love in their lives and in our world.
The position is part-time, less than 19 hours a week, and includes weekends, early mornings, and late afternoon/evenings.
Responsibilities
- Perform food preparation and service tasks such as cooking and serving food and beverages when necessary; ensure that food is prepared and presented in an acceptable manner by complying with or monitoring food preparation methods, portion sizes, garnishing, presentation, and allergy awareness.
- Event set-up, break down, and cleanup, including, but not limited to, cleaning of dining room and kitchen as well as cleaning of floors and emptying of trash.
- Assist as needed with shopping for food and beverages, to include unloading and storing the supplies.
- Comply with State and local health regulations to ensure that safe and sanitary food-handling practices are observed in the food preparation and serving areas.
- Report complaints regarding food quality or service to the supervisor; investigate and resolve general complaints.
Supervision and Authority
Supervision is received from the Food Services Manager and Assistant Food Services Manager. The position exercises no discretion or independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- Must have ordinary ambulatory skills; ability to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weight of 10–50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time (duration of shift).
- Must be able to deal with extreme temperature change.
- Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate kitchen equipment.
- Frequently required to use repetitive motion of the hands/wrists.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
- Frequent evening, weekend, and/or holiday work is required.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, quantity food production and serving techniques.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, food safety/sanitation requirements and procedures.
- Ability to cook, or willingness to learn, various types of cuisines and foods.
- Thorough knowledge of various kitchen appliances and their proper usage.
- Ability to interact positively with guests, co-workers, and supervisor.
- Ability to multi-task, be detail-oriented, and problem-solve to effectively deal with staff and guests.
- Food Safety Training required.
