The organization is seeking a Food Safety Assistant to join its Regulatory Affairs & ESG team in Laredo, TX.
This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional who wants to build a career in food safety, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and agricultural operations. The Food Safety Assistant will help maintain and continuously improve the organization's food safety and quality systems while supporting audits, employee training, regulatory compliance, traceability, and internal verification programs.
Responsibilities
- Support the daily administration and continuous improvement of the organization's Food Safety Program, Food Safety Plan, Quality System, and Organic Production/Handling Plan.
- Help promote a strong food safety culture by leading by example and reinforcing established food safety standards and procedures.
- Review employee food safety and organic production training and help identify opportunities for improvement.
- Conduct regular reviews with functional teams to identify compliance gaps, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
- Monitor completion of system verifications, microbiological testing, internal audits, and employee training according to established schedules.
- Track internal verification activities using automated verification and compliance systems.
- Support customer, vendor, regulatory, and third-party audits, including preparation and follow-up activities.
- Assist with food safety investigations, non-conformance resolution, corrective actions, and SOP development.
- Maintain accurate records, databases, meeting documentation, and compliance files.
- Conduct product traceability, recall exercises, lot control, and label verification using internal systems.
- Utilize ERP systems, Power BI, and other technology platforms to support food safety and quality reporting.
- Assist with maintaining and updating quality system policies, procedures, and documentation.
- Help ensure food safety practices remain aligned with FDA, USDA, customer requirements, and third-party audit standards.
- Maintain the confidentiality of proprietary information and company data.
- Collaborate with teams across multiple departments and locations to ensure consistent compliance with established standards.
Requirements
- 1+ year of experience in food safety, quality assurance, agriculture, produce, food production, or a related industry.
- Post-secondary education in Food Safety, Quality Assurance, Agriculture, or a related field is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with ERP systems, KPI portals, Nav, Power BI, or similar business software is highly valued.
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and data.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships across multiple organizational levels.
- Strong follow-through, organization, multitasking, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision while contributing to a collaborative team.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, continuously evolving environment.
- Ability to quickly adapt to growth, process improvements, new technologies, and changing requirements.
- Spanish language skills are an asset.
- Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Primarily office-based with occasional travel to other company locations as needed.
Regular exposure to warehouse and agricultural environments, including humid, moist, and cold conditions.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and carry items generally ranging from 2-50 lbs., depending on operational requirements.
Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use.
Regular interaction with employees and teams across various departments and backgrounds.
Monday-Friday schedule, with occasional after-hours work as business needs and deadlines require.
Ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
