Fleet Trainee

Dakota County is seeking a motivated individual for a part-time and/or full-time temporary Fleet Trainee position. This entry-level role offers the opportunity to perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled tasks in the repair of autos, trucks, and equipment under direct supervision. It is a great opportunity to gain direct work experience on a variety of vehicles and equipment in a nationally recognized fleet department. The department is willing to work part-time hours around a school schedule and allow full-time hours during breaks and summer months. Temporary fleet techs may be hired into permanent positions when available.

About the role

This position is located at the Dakota County Maintenance Facility in Empire/Rosemount, MN. The role is designated as Safety Sensitive pursuant to Dakota County Policy.

Pay

$18.00 - $21.00/hour, dependent on qualifications.

Schedule

Hours vary based on trainee availability, with flexibility for part-time around school schedules and full-time during breaks and summer months.

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs and preventive maintenance service on vehicles and equipment.
• Maintain and record supplies and materials used on each vehicle or piece of equipment repaired or serviced.
• Operate equipment, clean vehicles and equipment, and pick up parts and supplies.
• Perform other maintenance tasks as necessary or assigned.

Requirements

• Enrollment in a college or technical school in Heavy Equipment, Automotive Repair, Fleet Maintenance, or a closely related degree program OR 3 months of direct work experience maintaining vehicles, trucks, or equipment.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct work experience as a Fleet Technician/Mechanic.

Skills & Work Environment

• Ability to follow directions, communicate professionally, and make decisions based on written and verbal instructions.
• Basic knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, hybrid, electric, and alternative fuel systems, as well as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and computer systems of vehicles and equipment.
• Skill in using electric, air, and hand tools, as well as computerized testing equipment.
• Ability to perform strenuous work daily, including frequent lifting and carrying up to 34 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds, rarely over 100 pounds).
• Physical demands include twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, balancing, and crouching.
• Exposure to changing weather conditions, uneven/slippery surfaces, dust, dirt, oil, grease, solvents, fumes, noise, and hazards associated with an equipment repair shop.
• Sensory demands include hearing, speech, near/far vision, color vision, tactile, and spatial perception.
• Use of hand tools, power tools, air tools, electronic testing equipment, welders, cutting torches, computers, and personal safety equipment.
