Job Summary

Salt Lake County invites applications for a comprehensive maintenance and repair position on light, medium, and heavy equipment, including gas, diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate will perform tasks such as diagnosing and repairing various mechanical and electrical systems, installing and removing in-vehicle equipment, and driving heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Works on a variety of equipment, such as heavy construction equipment, refuse trucks, vactors, bucket trucks, 10-wheeled dump trucks with snow plows, 80 passenger buses, street sweepers, and landfill equipment.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems; determines materials and parts required.
  • Repairs, overhauls, or replaces engines, transmissions, fuel injection pumps, fuel injectors, carburetors, alternators, clutches, brakes, steering and suspension systems, differentials, hydraulic components, electrical, computer, fuel, and cooling systems.
  • Diagnoses and repairs pulse-width modified hydraulic systems, components, pumps, and electrical/air-over hydraulic valves with GPS feedback controls.
  • Diagnoses and repairs drivability issues using laptop data-link computer software, electrical circuits, short and open circuits, modern serial data, and multiplexing circuitry.
  • Tests, inspects, and certifies high-pressure compressed natural gas (CNG) on vehicle fueling systems.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports, including Utah State Inspections, Salt Lake County Emissions, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and Fleet Management Information System.
  • Drives heavy equipment and trucks in and out of shop bays for maintenance. May drive heavy equipment to road test and diagnose issues.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of equivalent experience in a field closely related to these duties; up to one year of education may be substituted for experience.
  • Must possess a complete set of tools at the time of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License accepted by the state of Utah is required at the time of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle.
  • Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire OR obtain the Class B CDL within thirty (30) days of hire date to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle.
  • Must possess a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card at the time of hire.
  • Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
  • Must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

Qualifications

Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation. Knowledge of vehicle components, hydraulic and electric systems, and heavy equipment is required. Skills include reading and comprehending vehicle diagnostic manuals, reading electrical and hydraulic schematics and flow charts, clearly articulating cause and correction in written form, determining parts and materials required for repairs, cutting material with carbon arc, oxy fuel, and plasma cutting equipment, and working extensively with physical labor.
