Description
The fleet supervisor provides day-to-day supervision of the school bus maintenance garage and district mechanics. The position ensures that school district fleet and equipment are properly maintained to minimize downtime and maximize the value of the district's investment. The fleet supervisor works with the director of transportation in the implementation of performance-based evaluations for district mechanics.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate maintenance of school bus fleet, district-owned vehicles, and machinery.
- Implementation of a cost-effective system for ordering parts, fuel, shop equipment, supplies, etc.
- Develop and implement a system of recording vehicle maintenance history and shop equipment inventory.
- Responsible for keeping an inventory of parts to be kept in stock.
- Supplying the mechanics with the right tools, and shop equipment for the job.
- Works in conjunction with director of transportation to help develop and implement a comprehensive plan to prepare district vehicles for appropriate inspections.
- Oversee the preventative maintenance program for fleet vehicles.
- Teach and mentor mechanics, modeling good business practices and work ethics.
- Maintain at least 50% of time on the shop floor mentoring and turning wrenches.
- Responsible for the overall appearance and presentation of the fleet to the public, including bus interior, exterior, wheels, tires, windows, driver's area, seating, floors, or any other items that affect the District's image.
- Evaluate and improve work practices, work flow, and equipment.
- Schedule work, assign responsibilities, and provide daily oversight.
- Oversee the continued development of all maintenance employees to keep them abreast of new technologies.
- Manage employee's skills and understanding of procedures and policies, developing, implementing, monitoring, and overseeing adherence to performance standards.
- Cook up and assign a fleet parking arrangement.
- Perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- State school bus inspection license.
- 3-5 years of fleet maintenance management experience preferred, and/or at least 3-5 years of team management in an environment with strong operational metrics.
- Associates or tech school degree preferred.
- Experience in purchasing, safety, and inventory control.
- Proficiency with software including Excel, Word, and web-based applications.
- Ability to lead and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
Salary
$44,480 - $81,880 per year (2025-26 rate)
$45,810 - $85,160 per year (2026-27 rate)
Salary is based on years of experience
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day, 260 days/year-round position
Desired Qualifications

Other Requirements
- Must be able to drive various types of district vehicles as well as climb on and under vehicles to perform various types of checks and repairs.
- Must pass an annual Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
