Fleet Mechanic (Part-Time)

About the Role

Our mechanics play a crucial role in the safe operation of our transit system, ensuring the safety of passengers who rely on transit for their daily commutes.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Evidence of a "safety first" attitude
  • Must have computer skills for the ability to repair sub-components of all types of buses
  • Must have the ability to understand and follow schematics
  • Maintains and creates records and work history within electronic repair orders
  • Inspect / diagnose / repair / replace brake systems, fuel and emission systems, drivelines, steering and suspension systems, passenger heating/cooling systems, etc. to ensure proper operating condition
  • Use of in-ground, above-ground hoists, and portable hoists/hydraulic jacks to raise equipment for inspection and repair
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance inspections and procedures (e.g., oil changes, lubrication, battery maintenance, compressed natural gas tank inspections)
  • Test drive/operate vehicles and equipment to diagnose malfunctions or ensure proper operation
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace protective guards, loose components, and safety devices
  • Perform vehicle chassis alignments
  • Replace, repair, and maintain internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel) and transmissions/differential units
  • Repair and adjust seats, doors, windows, interior/exterior trim, and hardware
  • Install, diagnose, repair, and replace vehicle accessories
  • Emission-related diagnosis and repairs
  • Minor fabrication, welding, grinding, soldering, etc.
  • Perform service calls on vehicles and equipment
  • Assist in training lower-level personnel
  • Perform backfill supervisory duties as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one-two years of vocational/technical schooling or equivalent work experience
  • One (1) year progressive heavy equipment maintenance preferred
  • Two (2) years technical degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Intermediate level computer skills (including Microsoft applications)
  • Experience with diagnostic computer equipment and software required
  • Ability to learn the design, maintenance, and adjustments of various bus systems (ADA equipment, air conditioning, brakes, chassis, cooling system, engine, lighting, safety equipment, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, precision instruments, HVAC recovery equipment, pneumatic wrenches, hydraulic presses, etc.)
  • Familiarity with computer programs such as Cummins Insite and Allison DOC

Pay

$25 per hour
