About the role

The City is hiring fleet mechanics at various levels to work on repairing and maintaining the City's fleet of automotive and heavy vehicles and equipment. Current vacancies are with the Department of Facility Maintenance, Automotive Equipment Service Division, and the Board of Water Supply, Water System Operations Division.

Responsibilities

  • Fleet Mechanic I: Entry-level opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in the repair and maintenance of automotive and/or heavy vehicles and equipment. Must meet minimum qualification requirements and be capable of progressing to the journey level.
  • Fleet Mechanic II: Independently repairs and overhauls a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles and equipment, including light vehicles, construction equipment, and heavy vehicles. Performs other related duties as required.
  • Fleet Mechanic III: Independently repairs, maintains, and overhauls a variety of heavy motorized vehicles and equipment, including refuse trucks, dump trucks, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, etc. Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Fleet Mechanic I: Experience and/or training in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment technology; basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory; basic analysis and modern diagnostic techniques; routine mechanical repairs and adjustments.
  • Fleet Mechanic II: Experience and/or training in maintenance and overhauls of a variety of light and heavy motorized vehicles and equipment; assistance in more difficult and complex tasks; supplemental training.
  • Fleet Mechanic III: Experience and/or training in repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy vehicles such as dump trucks, truck tractors, and refuse trucks.

Qualifications

  • At time of application, must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Education/Training: Relevant formal training or experience in an automotive or diesel mechanics program may be credited towards the application.
  • Licenses/Certificates: Valid Driver’s License (Type 3), Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B), D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate, Certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate, Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator.

Special Work Conditions

Depending on the department and position, you may be required to work on weekends and holidays and may be subject to rotating and/or night shift work.
