Fleet Mechanic
About the role
This position assists the Fleet Services Manager with the maintenance and repair of approximately 250 Lubbock County vehicles. The role includes supervising inmates, teaching new skills, and ensuring all work is inspected and correct.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and coordinate the servicing, maintenance, and repair of agency vehicles
- Write and assign work orders for individual vehicles
- Monitor work-in-progress on all work being performed by inmates
- Examine and sign work orders after work is completed
- Inspect capital equipment randomly
- Teach new skills, encourage, and mentor inmates
- Monitor tools, equipment, and supplies
- Diagnose vehicle operating problems
- Perform bench repairs to various types of automotive components
- Operate a wide variety of hand, power, and bench tools
- Test drive vehicles to verify effectiveness of repairs
- Discuss malfunctions, warranties, parts, and service with customers
- Stay abreast of new technologies on new vehicles
- Estimate repairs, coordinate, and interact with parts vendors
- Compile information from files and records to respond to inquiries
- Coordinate the disposal of hazardous materials
- Coordinate various phases of vehicle repair including warranty work performed by dealerships
- On-call 24/7 for repairs and road service
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED
- Training or courses in automotive repair at a college or trade school
- Three or more years of extensive progressively responsible work experience in repairing and maintaining automotive vehicles
- Knowledge of agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Automotive knowledge - Functions, interactions, and proper operation of all automotive systems (electrical, ignition, engine, power train, brakes, transmission, etc.)
- Read and understand automotive repair manuals
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to make quick and accurate judgment calls regarding the need to provide information to Division personnel
- Proficient with personal computers and various software
- Confidentiality - Must be able to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations
- Valid driver license from state of Texas
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified in 3 Categories
- Current State of Texas Vehicle Safety & Emissions Inspector License
- Possession of or ability to obtain, a Basic Jailer’s Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
Supervisory Responsibilities
This is a non-supervisory position. Position Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED, plus some training or courses in automotive repair at a college or trade school. Three or more years of extensive progressively responsible work experience in repairing and maintaining automotive vehicles is desired. Alternate experience will be evaluated and considered. Knowledge of agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Automotive knowledge - Functions, interactions, and proper operation of all automotive systems (electrical, ignition, engine, power train, brakes, transmission, etc.) and of the tools, equipment, procedures and methods applicable to diagnosing, repairing and testing corrections to malfunctions. Read and understand automotive repair manuals. Assist inmates in diagnosing and repairing malfunctioning vehicles. Interpersonal skills - Must exercise excellent interpersonal skills - position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, diplomacy, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working/professional relationships with external and internal customers. Communication skills - Excellent verbal and written communication skills to include grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Ability to make quick and accurate judgment calls regarding the need to provide information to Division personnel. Computer skills – proficient with personal computers and various software; e.g. spreadsheets, word processing, databases, desk-top publishing, smart phone and other standard office equipment. Organization skills - Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a high-stress, fast-paced, multi-demand environment, and the ability to make sound work-related judgments and decisions. Leadership skills - Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct and motivate inmates. Confidentiality - Must be able to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid driver license from state of Texas. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified in 3 Categories or obtain them within one (1) year of employment. Current State of Texas Vehicle Safety & Emissions Inspector License or obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment. Possession of or ability to obtain, a Basic Jailer’s Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
