Summary
The Public Works - Fleet mechanic position is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City’s fleet and infrastructure. Main duties include vehicle and equipment maintenance, part rebuilding/replacement, and problem-solving.
Supervisory Responsibilities
None.
Pay
- Starting Range: $35.28/hr. with Class A CDL, $35.78/hr. without Class A CDL
- Raises: $3/hr. after first year, $3/hr. after second year

Essential Duties
- Examine vehicles and determine nature and extent of damage or malfunction
- Review active manufacturer recalls that pertain to City equipment and vehicles
- Use hydraulic equipment
- Rebuild and/or replace parts
- Rewire when needed
- Mend body damage and weld broken parts
- Solve problems
- Operate various powered maintenance equipment and hand tools
- Perform miscellaneous duties such as repairing machinery, tools, and equipment, cleaning buildings and garage bays
- Operate heavy equipment such as tractors, tool carriers, dump trucks, backhoes, mini-excavators, Vactor trucks
- Backup staffing for emergency response such as removing snow and ice
- Support other departments as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- At least two years of public works (or related) maintenance experience
- Valid commercial driver's license (C.D.L.) Class A with a good driving record, or ability to obtain within one year of employment
- Certification (or other documented training) in vehicle/equipment maintenance
- Basic technical competence and electrical skills
- Ability to use a personal computer for email and file management
- Understanding, interpreting, explaining, and applying relevant policies, procedures, and regulations
- Excellent communication skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as frequent bending, squatting, stretching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy items over 100 pounds unassisted
- Regular attendance and willingness to work overtime and staggered shifts as needed
