Fleet Mechanic

This position is located at the Ottawa, Joliet, or Aurora fleet facilities and focuses on preventive and advanced corrective maintenance of company fleet vehicles and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and economical operation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all preventive maintenance activities on fleet vehicles and equipment according to defined procedures.
  • Conduct diagnostics and repairs on electric systems, brake systems, and gasoline vehicle drivability issues.
  • Replace components and perform repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Transport fleet vehicles and equipment between service locations, operating areas, and third-party establishments.
  • Fuel vehicles and equipment following company safety guidelines and state/federal regulations.
  • Identify and escalate vehicle or equipment maintenance issues beyond personal qualifications to ensure timely resolution.
  • Organize and manage daily work assignments, recording time, materials, and service charges accurately.
  • Report unsafe conditions or work practices to mitigate injuries or safety incidents.
  • Engage courteously with fleet, business unit, and department personnel to ensure transparency in maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with third-party service providers, training, and safety teams to improve fleet maintenance effectiveness.
  • Work with safety personnel and committees to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Execute responsibilities promptly to ensure fleet vehicle availability, performance, and reliability.
  • Initiate process, service, and material improvements to enhance departmental efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide timely updates on pending fleet maintenance activities for efficient resource scheduling.
  • Serve as a fleet helper backup and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with air brake endorsement (training provided if not already obtained).
  • Self-furnish tools to perform daily work and obtain the company’s complete Fleet Services Mechanic tool list within one year of certification.
  • Pass the company’s in-house Fleet Services Mechanic Certification test.
  • ASE certifications (minimum of 4 total, with at least 3 in Engine Repair, Brakes, Electrical Systems, Engine Performance, or Suspension/Steering). Must meet requirements within 120 days (or 180 days for newly hired mechanics without certifications).
  • 2–3 years of experience in automotive work, including preventive/corrective maintenance, brake systems, electrical systems, and tire mounting (or equivalent academic/education experience).
  • Reading, writing, and computer skills to enter work orders, time, and material records into company systems.
  • Ability to comprehend and complete company-required training on communications, driving, safety, and compliance.
  • Ability to learn and perform preventive maintenance procedures and new equipment training.
  • Available to work 2nd shift (approximately 1:30 PM–10:00 PM, Monday through Friday).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Automotive technology courses.
  • Exposure to utility, municipal, or commercial fleet maintenance environments.
  • Knowledge of natural gas vehicles and related support systems.

Working Conditions

  • Works in a garage and/or field environment.
  • Requires flexibility in working shifts as needed.

Pay

$32.74 USD hourly. Base salary varies depending on location, role, skill set, and level of experience.
