Fleet Manager
SDI Management LLC is a family-owned company responsible for the administrative management of the SDI Affiliated Companies and operating subsidiaries. SDI’s affiliates are industry leaders in geotechnical construction and specialty drilling, including micropiles, anchors, large diameter shafts, well services, and dam construction and rehabilitation. This full-time, exempt position is based in Mt. Morris, PA and reports to Corporate Management.
About the role
The Fleet Manager owns the performance, reliability, project assignment, and cost tracking of SDI's equipment fleet. The fleet comprises over 3,000 pieces of primarily off-road equipment including drill rigs (shaft, geotechnical, and well-service), grout plants, compressors, generators, pumps, excavators, loaders, cranes, and related support equipment, along with a smaller supporting fleet of heavy-duty trucks, CDL vehicles, and trailers. This role leads the maintenance team, drives rig uptime through preventive maintenance and data-driven decision making, manages parts inventory and vendor relationships, and champions the use of modern fleet technology — including telematics and AI tools — to reduce downtime and control cost.
Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day fleet movement and maintenance operations with a primary focus on drill rigs and off-road support equipment (grout plants, compressors, generators, pumps, excavators, loaders, cranes) and a secondary focus on the on-road fleet of trucks, CDL vehicles, and trailers
- Build, run, and continuously improve the preventive maintenance program for rigs and equipment, tracked by engine hours and OEM service intervals, to maximize uptime and extend equipment life
- Track and report on rig and equipment utilization, availability, cost per hour, and other key performance metrics using fleet management software, hour-meter and telematics data
- Coordinate rig and equipment repairs with internal shop personnel, field mechanics, OEM service, and outside vendors to minimize downtime on active jobs
- Drive adoption of digital tools in the shop, including electronic inspections, digital work orders, and mobile reporting, and coach the team on using them
- Maintain accurate, audit-ready records for equipment inspections and certifications (including crane and rigging inspections), and ensure the on-road fleet stays in full compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and state regulations
- Support company safety initiatives and enforce fleet safety standards
- Monitor and control fuel usage, maintenance costs, and overall fleet spend; identify savings and make repair-versus-replace recommendations without compromising safety or performance
- Manage relationships with parts suppliers, repair vendors, and leasing companies, and negotiate pricing and service terms
- Oversee inventory of parts, tools, and consumables with accurate, system-based tracking
- Prepare clear reports and dashboards on fleet efficiency, maintenance schedules, cost trends, and compliance status for leadership
- Partner closely with shop supervisors, mechanics, drillers, and field operations teams to keep rigs turning and crews productive
- Manage and develop the internal fleet team, including mechanics, shop personnel, and fleet support staff: set priorities, assign work, and hold the team accountable for uptime, quality, and safety
- Serve as the primary fleet contact for project leads and managers at SDI sister companies, coordinating the assignment, transfer, condition, and return of SDI-owned equipment across jobs and entities
- Use AI tools (such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude) to analyze maintenance and cost data, summarize repair histories, draft reports and communications, and streamline routine administrative work
- Apply AI-assisted analytics and telematics to identify failure trends, optimize service intervals, and flag underutilized or high-cost assets
- All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of fleet or equipment management experience, with drilling, mining, oil and gas, or heavy civil construction equipment strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of drill rigs and off-road support equipment, including hydraulic, diesel, and electrical systems
- Experience managing hour-based maintenance programs for heavy diesel equipment; familiarity with CDL fleet operations and DOT compliance for the on-road portion of the fleet
- Hands-on experience with fleet management or telematics platforms (such as Samsara, Geotab, Fleetio, or similar) strongly preferred
- Knowledge of Point of Rental software or similar equipment rental and billing systems a plus
Skills & Abilities
- Proven ability to lead a shop or fleet team and to work effectively with project leads across sister companies to keep SDI-owned equipment deployed, maintained, and accounted for
- Curious and adaptable, with a willingness to test new tools and processes that make the fleet serve operations better

- Sound mechanical knowledge of drill rigs, heavy equipment, and heavy-duty trucks
- Strong negotiation and purchasing skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Highly motivated self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Comfortable with technology and data: proficient in Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, Teams), and able to quickly learn fleet software, telematics dashboards, and AI tools
- Able to handle changing priorities and use good judgment under pressure
