Employment type: Full-Time Regular, non-exempt. Salary range: $59,379 – $86,161 annually (paid biweekly). Placement within the range is based on certifications and experience.

About the role

The City of Fort Collins Fleet team is looking for a Fleet Maintenance Technician to maintain and repair a wide variety of vehicles and equipment—automobiles, heavy-duty units, turf utility vehicles, commercial mowers, utility carts, ATVs, and small plows—so they remain safe and reliable. Work hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Uniforms, safety shoes, and safety equipment are provided. CDL training and licensing are provided if needed.

Compensation follows an eight-step pay structure; placement is determined by demonstrated competencies and ASE (or comparable) certifications in light- or heavy-duty vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain all types of heavy and/or light-duty equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and major repairs.
  • Prepare new vehicles for service: order specifications, install components or special equipment.
  • Provide customer service: on-site service, after-hours service, and special departmental requests.
  • Provide information for bid specifications and job estimates.
  • Research part information and process orders.
  • Perform required annual tests on vehicles/mechanical equipment and prepare documentation.
  • Maintain or update warranty-repair records.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and/or functionally related licenses or certificates.
  • Three or more years of auto mechanical repair experience, or a combination of auto mechanical repair experience and vocational/technical training in equipment and vehicle repairs and/or electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Valid Regular Driver’s License (required at hire).
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class B with P2 endorsement (must obtain within six months of hire; some positions may require CDL-Class A with Air Brake, Tanker, and Motorcycle endorsements).
  • ASE certifications in light- or heavy-duty vehicles (or comparable certifications) determine placement in the step-level pay plan.
  • CFC License and CFC Refrigerant Certification Type I and II (some positions may require Opacity Inspector Certification).

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to interpret electric and hydraulic schematic diagrams and perform necessary repairs.
  • Ability to diagnose engine and/or electrical problems.
  • Ability to operate engine diagnostic equipment and engine analyzer equipment.
  • Knowledge of emissions testing requirements and processes.
  • Ability to weld using different types of welders.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Ability to utilize Fleet Maintenance Software, Fleet Diagnostic and Repair Software, and Word Processing Software.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence to interact, work, and develop relationships with people of diverse identities, perspectives, and backgrounds.
  • Strong learning orientation; leverages resources and adapts to changing issues and trends.
  • Ability to understand and meet the diverse needs of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to utilize digital tools for organizational information, individual, and teamwork.

Post-offer requirements

  • Drug test within 48 hours of offer for CDL holders or within 96 hours for non-CDL holders.
  • Post-Offer Employment Test (P.O.E.T).
  • Must be prepared to present any current CDL license or permit during in-person interviews.
