Capitol Engineering is an established and expanding custom fabrication company delivering high quality engineered & fabricated steel products to a wide variety of industries including mining, agriculture, and general industrial applications. Capitol Engineering was established in 1937 and we are currently growing at a rapid pace and are looking to add a Quality Control Assistant to our team. This position requires an experienced and detail-focused individual that wants to be part of a growing team. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and a proactive approach to problem solving. About The Role Capitol Engineering is hiring a Welder / Fitter 2 for our Phoenix fabrication shop. This is a mid-level production role that pairs strong all-position MIG (GMAW) and Flux-Core (FCAW) welding with the ability to lay out and fit up assemblies independently from drawings - across the full range of custom products we build, including structural steel, tanks, ducting, mining and wear equipment, and other specialty fabrications in carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and abrasion-resistant (AR) plate. We welcome candidates whose strength is welding, whose strength is fitting, or who do both. At this level we expect confident capability on at least one side and working proficiency across both - handling assignments of increasing complexity with minimal supervision, reading fabrication drawings and weld symbols, and helping bring less-experienced shop staff up to speed. What You'll Do Production Welding - All-Position MIG & Flux-Core Perform GMAW (MIG) and FCAW (Flux-Core) welding in all positions (1F-4F, 1G-4G) on a wide variety of custom products - structural components, tanks, equipment frames, wear parts, ducting, and other specialty fabrications. Handle assignments of increasing complexity - multi-pass welds, varied joint configurations, and different product geometries - with minimal supervision. Weld on carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and AR plate as assigned, selecting and verifying the correct WPS, filler metals, and shielding gases for each application before beginning work. Consistently produce welds that meet applicable code and drawing acceptance criteria. Fit-Up & Assembly Perform structural and custom fit-up and assembly independently using layout tools and measuring instruments, working from drawings and work orders across a variety of product geometries and sizes. Use tape measure, combination square, torpedo level, framing square, and other layout tools to establish accurate positioning and verify dimensional compliance and squareness before tacking. Perform tack welding and weld sequencing to secure assemblies across varied product types and material thicknesses. Prepare weld joints using grinders, wire wheels, and flap discs, selecting appropriate tooling and abrasives for the material - including contamination-prevention practices for stainless steel. Identify and report fit-up discrepancies, dimensional issues, or missing information to the Shop Lead before proceeding. Drawing & Blueprint Interpretation Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances, bills of material, and general notes to understand the full scope of an assigned job. Extract weld requirements, assembly details, and dimensional data from drawings to set up and execute assigned work correctly. Identify and communicate drawing errors, missing information, or material conflicts to the Shop Lead before work proceeds. Weld Quality & Self-Inspection Verify joint cleanliness, fit-up condition, and WPS parameters before beginning each weld assignment. Perform thorough self-inspection of completed welds and assembled components against drawing requirements and applicable acceptance criteria before releasing work. Report weld defects, non-conformances, or quality concerns to the Shop Lead immediately. Team Support, Equipment & Safety Provide informal support and guidance to Welder / Fitter 1 and apprentice personnel on fit-up methods, material handling, and drawing interpretation. Operate welding equipment, wire feeders, power sources, cutting tools, and associated tooling proficiently and safely; perform pre-use checks each shift and report issues promptly. Wear all required PPE at all times and follow facility safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, fume extraction requirements, and material-specific handling and ventilation practices. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work station throughout the shift and report unsafe conditions or near-misses to supervision immediately. Perform other related duties as assigned in support of production operations. Required WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR High school diploma or equivalent. 5-8 years of production welding and/or fabrication experience across multiple product types. Active welder performance qualifications in all positions (1F-4F, 1G-4G) using GMAW (MIG) and FCAW (Flux-Core) per applicable welding code or company WPS, current and documented. Demonstrated ability to perform structural fit-up and assembly independently using measuring and layout tools. Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and standard weld symbols and apply them to layout, fit-up, and welding. Proficiency with angle grinders and hand tools for material preparation and weld finishing across multiple material types. Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, and a commitment to producing quality work safely. Preferred Demonstrated welding experience across three or more of the shop's primary materials: carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, AR plate. Experience operating production equipment such as a band saw, cold saw, CNC plasma table, plate rolls, press brake, or beamline. Exposure to a broad range of fabricated product types - structural steel, tanks, equipment frames, ducting, or wear components. Familiarity with filler metal and shielding gas selection for carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. AWS Certified Welder credential and/or OSHA 10 General Industry certification. WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Requirements Regularly stand, walk, and remain on your feet for the majority of the shift in a production shop environment. Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching during welding, fit-up, grinding, and machine operation. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials, tooling, and components up to 50 lbs; team lifts or mechanical assists are used for heavier items. Sustained work requiring manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and physical endurance across varied fabrication tasks. Ability to wear and work in all required PPE - welding helmet, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and protective clothing - for extended periods. Environmental Conditions Work is performed in a custom metal fabrication shop subject to varying temperatures, noise, dust, metal particulate, and vibration. Regular exposure to welding fumes, arc flash, UV radiation, heat, and cutting byproducts inherent to a production fabrication environment. Exposure to a range of base metals - carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and AR plate - each with associated handling and fume considerations. Proper ventilation, fume extraction, and PPE are provided and required at all times per company safety policies and OSHA regulations. SCHEDULE & WORK ENVIRONMENT Standard Monday through Friday schedule during regular facility operating hours. Occasional overtime may be required to meet production demands or project deadlines.
