Fish and Wildlife Technician I (Interim)

Interim position established to address a one-time or recurring need of less than nine months duration. Eligible for overtime pay, paid leave, paid holidays, and employee discounts.

About the role

Join the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) in performing beginning-level technical work in various locations for fisheries, Wildlife Management Area (WMA), habitat management programs, or research programs. This role offers a dynamic outdoor work environment in the woods or on the water.

Responsibilities

• Transport fish and wildlife throughout the state and release them into appropriate habitat.
• Feed, water, and care for fish and wildlife while in the agency’s care.
• Perform maintenance work on equipment, facilities, and grounds.
• Assist biologists and other professionals in executing their duties.
• Interact with the public as assigned by a supervisor.
• Learn to operate heavy and technical equipment (e.g., tractors, mowers, agricultural equipment).
• Mow, weed-eat, and landscape.
• Learn to collect data concerning fish and wildlife and prepare reports.
• Assist in performing soil and water tests and planting/cultivating agricultural crops for wildlife food.
• Assist in the creation and restoration of terrestrial and aquatic habitat through environmentally accepted construction and development practices.
• Assist in identifying and marking boundaries of habitat and department-held lands.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in fisheries or wildlife management may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and be exposed to insects, snakes, and other wildlife.
• Ability to operate various types of equipment for building and lawn maintenance.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, crawl, and walk.
• Strong work ethic, teamwork, adaptability, and self-motivation.

Pay

$13.76 - $20.64 hourly

Schedule

37.5 hours per week, less than 9 months maximum duration.

Working Conditions

A majority of time may be spent working outside in inclement weather. Exposure to insects, snakes, and other potentially harmful animals is expected.
