About the role

The Fiscal Accountant position within the Career and Adult Learning Services Department will involve performing a variety of complex record keeping and reporting assignments, reviewing, maintaining, verifying, and submitting payrolls and supporting documents to the Business Services Division, maintaining, verifying, and updating end of year program financial reports, compiling, preparing, and checking statistical accounting reports, and preparing and balancing program accounts and records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of complex record keeping and reporting assignments for the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Review, maintain, verify, and submit payrolls and supporting documents to the Business Services Division.
  • Maintain, verify, and update end of year program financial reports.
  • Compile, prepare, and check statistical accounting reports.
  • Prepare and balance program accounts and records.
  • Aid in the development and monitoring of budgets, budget reporting, and budget analysis.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education: Equivalent to the completion of a Bachelor's degree with course work in accounting, bookkeeping, or a related field.

Experience: Four years of increasingly responsible payroll, accounting and bookkeeping experience which involved maintaining and reviewing financial or statistical reports. Experience in a school district or with a county office of education is highly desirable.

Licenses or Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license and appropriate vehicle operation insurance preferred.

Application Procedures

Applicants must submit a completed application and are encouraged to attach a résumé to the application material. Qualified applicants will be invited to a written examination (50%) and an oral examination covering the knowledge and skills required (50%). An eligibility list will be established and the top three ranks of candidates will be interviewed for final consideration and appointment. The eligibility list established will remain in effect for a period of six (6) months unless it no longer exists due to an insufficient number of available candidates.

Comments and Other Information

The Santa Cruz County Office of Education provides an Associate Degree stipend of $375, a Bachelor’s Degree stipend of $750, a Master's Degree stipend of $1,500, a Doctorate Degree (no Master's) of $1,500, or a Doctorate Degree (with Master's) of an additional $400 per year for eligible employees. Degree stipends are prorated based upon full time equivalent.
