Firmware Engineer, Security
About the role
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.
As part of a hardworking team of specialists and engineers, you will develop firmware for the secure enclaves of custom ASICs in the TeraWave system. You will work closely with hardware and communications systems engineers to develop and validate low-level firmware supporting the security, operation, and lifecycle management of custom silicon.
Responsibilities
- Develop ROM code, bootloaders, and runtime firmware for secure enclaves of custom ASICs.
- Develop and support firmware for secure boot, attestation, OTA updates, manufacturing provisioning, secure debug, telemetry, recovery, tamper monitoring, and security.
- Work closely with hardware and communications systems engineers to define and implement firmware and hardware interfaces.
- Support pre-silicon firmware development, integration, and validation.
- Support post-silicon bring-up, debugging, and validation of custom ASICs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in firmware development.
- Experience developing software in C.
- Experience writing software that directly controls hardware, such as firmware, kernel device drivers, or low-level embedded code.
- Experience debugging and validating embedded firmware and hardware/software interactions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Rust, especially no-std Rust.
- Experience with Cortex-M ISA.
- Experience with ARM TrustZone and TF-M.
- Experience with RTOSes such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or TockOS.
- Experience with CI flows and automated hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
- Familiarity with security concepts including secure boot, root of trust, symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, PKI chains, penetration testing, or similar technologies.
- Understanding of board-level hardware design, including the ability to work with schematics and data sheets.
- Experience testing firmware using simulation and emulation platforms such as QEMU, Palladium, or ZeBu.
- Experience with secure manufacturing provisioning.
- Experience developing code for safety-critical environments.
