About the role

Responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor at building, highway, and heavy construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolition sites. Operates hand and power tools of all types, including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and other tools and instruments. Duties include cleaning and preparing sites, digging trenches, cleaning up rubble, and assisting other craft workers.

Responsibilities

• Performs general labor and fire watch duties, including moving work pieces, tools, and supplies manually or by hand truck.
• Lifts, moves, and clamps work pieces using hoists, pry bars, wrenches, hammers, and wedges.
• Cleans work pieces to remove slag, rust, and grease using wire brushes, portable grinders, hand scrapers, or chemical solutions.
• Connects hoses from hand torches to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders or cables from power sources to electrode holders.
• Starts engines to activate electric generators.
• Removes, tags, or marks finished work and moves it as directed.
• Under supervision, attaches grappling equipment to objects for movement by crane.
• Digs trenches, places shoring, and lowers tools and materials to workers in excavations and vaults.
• Gathers and carries tools, supplies, and equipment to work sites.
• Assists in maintaining, repairing, rebuilding, and fabricating metal equipment.
• Learns to maintain equipment and work with tools of the trade.
• Obtains, stores, and safeguards supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Determines methods and materials needed for assigned maintenance, repair, or construction tasks.
• Performs fire watch and hole watch duties, including proper placement of fire blankets, operating fire extinguishers, and initiating emergency response actions.
• Works in operating facilities and observes additional safety policies and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent.

Requirements

• 0-6 months of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
• Actively participates in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
• Sets a personal example of safe behavior.
• Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Performs basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using units of weight, measurement, and volume.
• Applies common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
• Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.

Physical Demands

• Works up to a 12-hour shift performing hard physical labor in varying temperatures and outdoor conditions.
• Maintains physical strength and stamina, using arms, hands, and legs fully.
• Pushes, pulls, and frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stoops, kneels, balances, crouches, crawls, and climbs to perform job tasks.
• Performs repetitive tasks continuously for several-hour intervals.
• Works in uncontrolled environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
• Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, and vests.
• Moves in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
• Works at heights and abides by all safety and fall-protection requirements.
• Evaluates information based on measurable standards and recognizes slight differences in shapes and shadings.
• Visualizes objects in three dimensions from drawings.
• Maintains good balance and works at heights.
• Possesses adequate vision (naturally or with correction) and hearing (naturally or with correction).
• Coordinates the use of eyes, hands, and feet effectively.

Schedule

Full-time position, typically scheduled to work 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to project requirements.

Pay

$21.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
