About the role
Performs a wide range of duties involved with preparing and/or serving food. Assists in cleaning work areas, equipment, and utensils. Helps with set up, service, and collection of garbage/trash as appropriate to the area of operation. Serves food to customers.
Responsibilities
- Perform preparation duties such as rinsing, peeling, slicing, and dicing fruit and vegetables.
- Weigh and measure ingredients.
- Wrap, date-label, and store food items.
- Clean and organize work areas, equipment, utensils, and service stations.
- Follow guidelines to ensure correct serving temperatures and adequate portion control.
- Serve customers in a fast, efficient, and friendly manner.
- Provide customers with information regarding food ingredients, availability, and pricing.
- Escalate customer concerns and complaints to management.
- Prepare individual servings according to recipes and portion control standards.
- Season and prepare a wide variety of foods.
- Ensure all work stations are kept clean and sanitary according to policies and procedures.
- Operate commercial kitchen equipment according to standards.
- Ensure foods are prepared, stored, and served at appropriate temperatures.
- Follow proper food sanitation and food handling protocols.
- Follow customer instructions to ensure customers receive food as ordered.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
- Reports to work promptly and on time.
- Maintains a well-groomed appearance appropriate for the Food Service Helper position.
- Completion of the provided training program.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Proficient understanding of food allergies and modified diets.
- Excellent people skills.
- Available to work shifts and extended hours.
Skills & Qualifications
- One year of experience in a commercial kitchen environment.
- Food handler training certificate.
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.
- Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
- Knowledge of food service lines set-up and temperature requirements.
- Skill in cooking and preparing a variety of foods.
- Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to read, write, add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
- Flexibility to work various shifts.
Working Conditions
- Considerable physical activity.
- May require handling objects that weigh up to 50 lbs.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, requiring following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
