Description
The Firefighter is responsible for fire fighting, which involves combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and saving lives and property. A firefighter is responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergencies frequently involving considerable hazards.
Essential Duties
- Responds to emergency incidents on assigned vehicles and perform tactical duties as assigned.
- Works directly under the direction of a Supervisor.
- Connects hose to hydrants or fire apparatus.
- Joins hose sections together and connects nozzles to the hose.
- Enters burning buildings with hose lines.
- Operates nozzles and applies the appropriate stream of water on fires.
- Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires.
- Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders.
- Performs ventilation procedures as needed and assigned.
- Answers emergency alarms, administers emergency care to injured persons, and removes and rescues persons from danger.
- Performs salvage operations such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water, removing debris, and putting smoke ejectors.
- Attends instruction and training sessions in fire fighting methods, equipment operation, first aid/emergency medical care, and street hydrant locations.
- Performs cleaning maintenance in the Fire Station. Also performs maintenance on fire equipment and apparatus.
- Affords assistance in inspecting businesses, commercial and industrial buildings, and places of public assembly for existing fire hazards.
- Identifies and reports any unsafe condition or possible hazard while employed by the City of Thomasville Fire Rescue Department.
- As assigned, may be required to perform functions of a Driver-Engineer in the Driver-Engineer's absence.
- Operate pumps to maintain a safe and adequate water supply, pressure, and required Fire Flow.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Mentor, coach, and succession management while employed by the City of Thomasville Fire Rescue Department.
Requirements
- Knowledge of all apparatus and equipment operation, streets within geographic areas, and methods used to combat, extinguish, and prevent fires and rescue work.
- Perform approved emergency medical care.
- The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- The ability to react quickly and calmly under duress and strain.
- Establishing and maintaining positive and effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
- A high school graduate or the equivalent.
- Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Fire Department.
- Climb ladders and work at significant heights and confined areas.
- Meet all qualifications set forth by the City of Thomasville and the Fire Rescue Chief.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Be willing to be cross-trained and serve as an Emergency Medical Technician.
- Demonstrate on and off-duty conduct that does not discredit the Fire Rescue Department or the City of Thomasville.
- Agility and strength to do prolonged, arduous work under adverse conditions.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Skill in operating all Firefighting and rescue equipment, including emergency vehicles.
- Interest and willingness to assist in community efforts throughout the City of Thomasville.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Knowledge, ability, and use of telephone techniques and etiquette.
- Must have working knowledge and understanding of the Incident Command System.
Physical/Environmental Requirements
- The primary work environment of this position is in the field, where the candidate will be exposed to extreme weather conditions and will be required to perform manual tasks.
- These tasks will include but are not limited to the following (lifting, pulling, pushing, climbing, and walking over rough terrain).
- Firefighting is a hazardous occupation, and all Firefighters are at risk of becoming injured while on duty.
- This is because they are required to face various dangers on any given day. Besides the perils of fire conditions, Firefighters may come in contact with poisonous, flammable, and explosive gases and chemicals or other hazardous materials that might have immediate or long-term effects on their health.
- Firefighters are required to work longer and more variable hours than most other workers.
