About the Role

Provides emergency medical response as a first responder. Responds to all fires for fire suppression, hazardous material spills, and rescues as a rescue team member. Ensures fire protection and prevention aligns with all local regulations.

Responsibilities

• Responds to fire and emergency calls as a member of a fire company.
• Lays hose, carries and sets up ladders, and uses fire equipment to extinguish fires and make rescues.
• Administers first aid.
• Participates in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections.
• Participates in drills and training activities.
• Operates department emergency and non-emergency apparatus.
• Ensures NASSCO’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented.
• Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCO’s Fire Management System.
• Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Basic knowledge of firefighting theories, concepts, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered.
• Frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques in firefighting.
• Firefighter 1 skills and successful completion of CSFM Firefighter 1 certification.
• Current CPAT or Biddle certification.
• Medical treatment proficiency up to San Diego protocol standards.
• Capability in most aspects of emergency care, firefighting, and rescues.
• Knowledge of techniques used to recognize health and safety hazards.
• Experience working with hazardous materials, including containment, cleanup, and mitigation disposal methods.
• Safe operation of tools and machinery.
• Proficiency in computer software programs (MS Office, iOS applications).
• Ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems.
• Ability to render aid on medical and trauma emergencies, including treatment and handoff to higher medical authority if needed.
• Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to interact with firefighters, employees, and management.

Physical Demands

• Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
• Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing.
• Must be able to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard, including shipboard activities.
• Capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces.
• Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching.
• Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements.
• Exposure to dust, fumes, and smoke occasionally.
• Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.
• Noise level in office environments is relatively low to moderate; in the outdoor shipyard production environment, it is moderate to noisy 70% of the time (may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering).

Pay

$53,300 - $74,900. This pay range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account factors such as skill sets, experience, training, and education.
