Firefighter / EMS
Representative Duties
Assures the coverage of all routes and ensures compliance with established assignments and schedule.
Assigns lines and buses to operators.
Utilizes the Advanced Fleet Maintenance System (AFMS) to monitor on street operations remotely, report field service discrepancies, and resolve street and field service performance problems.
Counsels employees on work related matters.
Establishes detours, posts and removes temporary signs, and directs and reroutes Motor Coach Operators and passengers, as necessary, during service deviations.
Identifies potential safety hazards and problems in motor coach operation. Makes recommendations or develops plans to correct hazards, resolve bus operation problems, and improve transit services.
Operates a motor coach safely, using defensive driving techniques, in unusual or emergency situations.
Enforces safety regulations.
Investigates accidents and incidents involving Motor Coach Operators.
Researches, prepares and maintains reports of important operational issues.
Identifies issues in the system where the service is not operating effectively as possible and prepares formal recommendations for improvement.
Requirements
Knowledge Of Accident, incident policy, procedures and documentation; bus exchange guidelines and charter route regulatory and safety assessment; State Vehicle Code and traffic regulations applicable to bus operations; principles and methods of recordkeeping and labor scheduling; safety and risk management procedures and practices; principles and practices of leading and coordinating the work of others; complaint procedures and customer relations; transit dispatch procedures; basic mathematics; effective customer service techniques.
Ability To Supervise, train and evaluate the work of a staff; coach and motivate staff members; lead teams of employees; analyze problems and develop effective and realistic solutions; communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; gather and analyze data, keep records and prepare a variety of reports, including reports related to accidents, incidents, service issues, and employee performance; prepare and deliver Motor Coach Operator performance evaluations; prepare and write daily work assignments/operator’s work board; make oral presentations; read, interpret and apply provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), department policies and procedures, and transit related Municipal Code; recognize hazardous and emergency situations and take appropriate corrective action; learn and use transit related software applications Advanced Fleet Management System (AFMS) and Operator Management System (OMS); learn the Big Blue Bus Department’s area of service and Vision, Mission and Values of the Department; provide effective customer service; establish and maintain effective cooperative working relationships with City staff, supervisors, co-workers, subordinate employees and the general public.
Skill In Reading, writing and communicating in English at an appropriate level, both verbally and in writing; organizing records and analyzing information; using a personal computer and applicable word processing and spreadsheet software applications; working effectively with others.
Education, Training and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Successful completion of college level coursework and/or equivalent training in Public Transportation, Public Administration or a related field desirable.
Three years of recent, paid work experience in transit services or transit operations.
At least one year of recent, paid experience must include leading and coordinating the work of others, or must successfully complete the City of Santa Monica’s Pre-Supervisory Academy within one year of date of appointment.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver license with passenger endorsement and appropriate medical certification.
Possession of a valid California Verification of Transit Training Document.
Must obtain School Pupil Activity Bus Certificate (SPAB) within one year from date of appointment.
Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
