About the role

The Freeport Fire & EMS Department is seeking part-time firefighters/emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to respond to fire and medical emergencies. The position is considered essential personnel and requires flexible hours to maintain minimum staffing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs fire suppression, fire prevention, fire inspection, fire investigation, emergency medical services, and/or emergency management response, as assigned
  • Responds to alarms and operates in a safe manner
  • Safely operates department apparatus, vehicles, and equipment
  • Performs the duties of pump operator as assigned
  • Contributes to routine protocols to keep Fire department facilities clean and safe
  • May inspect buildings and other properties for fire hazards and enforces fire prevention ordinances
  • Partners with Emergency Medical Technicians on shift, or any others as assigned, to execute duties
  • Responsible for coordinating with team to ensure the safety of employees and volunteer members
  • In emergency situations, may serve as the Incident Commander during emergency operations
  • Contribute to efficient fire, emergency medical, and emergency management operations
  • Follows policies and procedures of the department
  • Participates in implementation of fire and emergency medical service programs for the city in order to carry department policies and goals effectively and efficiently
  • Attends training, meetings, and department in-service activities as assigned
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Texas Department of State Health Services certification as an EMT or higher
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection certification as a Basic Structural Firefighter
  • Valid Texas Driver License, or the ability to obtain one within 90-days of hire, with a Class B endorsement if applicable
  • Must pass a drug analysis test, physical exam, and successfully complete a background check

  • Knowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention, inspection, investigation, and emergency medical services
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, procedures, and regulations
  • Ability to use tools and equipment safely
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to effectively give and receive instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the members of the community

Skills

  • Indirectly supervises junior Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, or any others assigned
  • May serve as the Incident Commander during emergency operations
  • Directly and indirectly responsible to ensure the safe actions of employees and volunteer members
  • Completes daily assign station duties
  • May evaluate fire, emergency medical, and emergency management operations
  • Enforces policies and procedures for the department in order to implement directives from the Chief
  • Implement fire and emergency medical service programs for the city in order to better carry out the policies and goals including those set forward in the city affirmative action plan
  • Attends training and meetings as may be assigned
  • May recommend programs or policies to alleviate department deficiencies
  • Responds to alarms and operates in a safe manner
  • Safely operates department apparatus and vehicles
  • Performs the duties of pump operator as assigned
  • May inspect buildings and other properties for fire hazards and enforces fire prevention ordinances
  • May perform departmental in-service training and activities
  • Obtains prior approval for expenditures
  • Prepares a variety of reports as necessary
  • May be asked to evaluate the need for new equipment and supplies
  • Meets with the public on all aspects of shift activities, as required or assigned
  • May be assigned to perform the duties of a higher classification in their absence
  • Stay current with firefighting technique and medical practices
  • May be assigned to perform any and all duties as necessary

Pay

  • Part-Time, Temporary: Estimated annual salary of $49,055

Schedule

  • Flexible hours assigned in order to maintain minimum staffing, as well as meet the required staffing needs. Shifts assigned in 12-hour or 24-hour increments. Total hours required are not guaranteed for Part-time, Temporary positions. Hours worked will be paid in accordance with FLSA. Hours will vary and may be altered at the discretion of the City Manager, Fire Chief, or a designee.
