About the role

The Fire Technology & EMS Instructor (Adjunct/Part-Time) will join a dynamic team committed to excellence in fire science education. This position provides instructional services in Fire Technology, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and related public safety fields at Río Hondo College’s Fire Academy.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver effective instruction in assigned fire science and EMS courses using current educational theory and practice.
  • Engage students through diverse teaching methods aligned with student learning outcomes (SLOs).
  • Audit, record, and report student performance, attendance, and academic progress.
  • Advise students on academic pathways, study skills, and career opportunities.
  • Integrate modern instructional technologies and maintain accurate course materials.
  • Revise curriculum and syllabi in accordance with department and industry standards.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and program assessments as required.
  • Support student learning through inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • For academy courses: work in a para-military environment, including physical training, ladder climbing, fire suppression, and field exercises.

Requirements

  • Any bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional experience; OR
  • Any associate degree and six (6) years of professional experience; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the discipline; AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Qualifications

  • An Associate degree in Fire Technology or related field; OR
  • At least 12 upper-division units in a relevant area and three (3) years of related work experience.
