Fire Instructor Part Time

Salary: $27.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements

• A High School diploma or its equivalent
• PA State Fire Academy Local Level Instructor certification
• IFSAC/PRO-BOARD Fire Instructor I certification, or higher
• IFSAC/PRO-BOARD certification for areas of instruction
• Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
• Valid clearances: PA Child Abuse History, PA State Police Criminal Background Check, and FBI Criminal Background Check
• Current, valid PA driver’s license

Desirable Requirements

• PA State Fire Academy Suppression Instructor certification
• Class B CDL with air brake and tank endorsement
• PA DOH Emergency Medical Responder, or higher certification

About the Role

The Fire Instructor, Part-Time is responsible for delivering training courses in classroom settings, hands-on practical sessions, and online distance environments. This position also maintains the learning environment, including classrooms and training fields, and ensures tools, equipment, and apparatuses assigned to the division are in good working order.

Responsibilities

• Ensures a customer-focused approach to instruction, scheduling, and supervision of Academy programs
• Enforces County, State, Federal, and NFPA policies, standards, regulations, and statutes related to emergency services instruction and training
• Communicates effectively with students, visiting instructors, staff, and customers, verbally and in writing, utilizing the chain of command as needed
• Performs routine maintenance on Fire Academy resources
• Works shifts including daylight, evening, and overnight to facilitate instructional needs
• Delivers instruction in both classroom and field settings
• Maintains tools, equipment, and apparatuses assigned to the fire academy division
• Maintains all professional certifications related to emergency services
• Performs related duties as assigned and required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of State Fire Academy, NFPA guidelines, policies, and standards
• Team working skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
• Ability to work various hours, including weekday daylight, evening, and weekends
• Ability to instruct proficiently in both classroom and field environments
• Ability to prepare training aids and educational materials
• Ability to deliver training via distance and online platforms
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
• Ability to maintain fire equipment used in instruction
• Ability to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, wetness/humidity
• Ability to operate firefighting apparatus
• Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 pounds, climb ladders, scale and rappel buildings, ascend ropes, and perform various emergency operations required to deliver a multi-disciplinary training curriculum
• Ability to wear job-specific personal protective equipment, including potential use of self-contained breathing apparatus and structural firefighting turnout gear in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable codes and standards
• Ability to work in a live fire training facility with potential immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheric conditions and high heat levels
• Ability to successfully complete a fitness-for-duty evaluation
• Ability to support other divisions of Emergency Services as needed

Residency

Must reside within Allegheny County within 1 year of employment.
