Provides support for inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems to ensure safe operation and regulatory compliance across campus facilities.

About the role

Three progressive levels are offered:

  • Level I: Entry-level support requiring little to no related experience and a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Level II: Routine inspection, testing, and maintenance requiring 1–3 years of related experience, a High School Diploma or equivalent, and basic Fire Systems certification(s).
  • Level III: Independent inspections, testing, and minor repairs requiring 3+ years of related experience, a High School Diploma or equivalent, NICET Level I–II or equivalent certification, and knowledge of NFPA requirements.

All levels require a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

Level I

  • Assist with inspections of fire alarm, sprinkler, and suppression systems
  • Support routine testing and preventive maintenance
  • Help replace basic components such as smoke detectors and extinguisher tags
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas
  • Assist with monthly fire extinguisher inspections
  • Support emergency response activities as directed

Level II

  • Inspect and test fire alarm, sprinkler, and suppression systems
  • Replace defective components (detectors, valves, extinguishers)
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks
  • Assist with troubleshooting of system issues
  • Support preparation of hot work permits
  • Respond to alarms and assist with emergency assessments

Level III

  • Conduct inspections and testing of systems independently
  • Perform minor repairs and component replacements
  • Maintain accurate inspection and compliance records
  • Support building safety inspections and audits
  • Respond to system alarms, faults, and service calls

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an Engineering-related field or equivalency (2 years of related work experience may substitute for 1 year of education)
  • Two years of related experience in fire alarm or fire sprinkler system installation, testing, and maintenance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NFPA, IBC, IFC, and State Fire Prevention Rules and Regulations regarding system testing and maintenance
  • Demonstrated computer, human relations, and communication skills
  • Must obtain a Utah State Fire Marshals Office Class A Certification for testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems within six months of employment
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
  • NICET certification for sprinkler technicians
  • Utah State Fire Marshal certification for Fire Sprinkler Technician
  • NICET Level II or higher in Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems or Layout of Sprinkler Systems
  • Experience with dry, pre-action, antifreeze, and fire pump systems
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, riser diagrams, and technical documents
  • Familiarity with testing protocols and compliance documentation

Pay

$20.00/hr. to $35.00/hr.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with occasional overtime for event support and rotating on-call alarm response coverage.
