Fire Sprinkler Layout Technician

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent service to customers alongside other Design staff members.
  • Work within NFPA, building, and underwritten standards to create and draft sprinkler designs.
  • Consistently and professionally complete all design work demonstrating mastery of:
    • Completing sprinkler drawings as detailed in the most current NFPA standards.
    • Identifying building construction types as identified in NFPA standards.
    • Identifying hazard types and appropriate protection.
    • Working within project budgets.
    • Coordinating work with other trades on complex projects and resolving coordination problems.
    • Designing projects, including cutting pipe with appropriate fittings and selecting required materials.
    • Operating AutoCAD, AutoCAD tools, or AutoSPRINK, and running Navis Works to develop clash reports.
    • Coordinating pipe drawings, heads, hangers, and other sprinkler components for both non-complex and complex projects.
    • Estimating and scheduling design hours for projects.
    • Meeting industry quality standards for drawings, hydraulic calculations, material pick-offs, and submittals.
    • Completing project paperwork such as test papers, insurance permits, and punch lists.
    • Identifying contract vs. non-contract work and alerting appropriate personnel in writing.
    • Troubleshooting and identifying potential problems before they manifest.
    • Understanding, carrying out, and communicating about all project tasks.
  • Communicate in face-to-face meetings with customers to provide accurate, thorough information and leave a positive impression of the company.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of all applicable fire codes, including NFPA 13.
  • Teach and mentor Trainees and Junior Designers in mastering responsibilities.
  • Serve as project leader when required, directing team members to complete projects efficiently and accurately, and providing regular status reports to the Manager.
  • Collaborate with other departments to service customers.
  • Work to achieve the company’s annual objectives and personal performance goals.
  • Operate in compliance with the company’s safety practices at all times.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • 3+ years of fire protection design experience is required.
  • Engineering background is a plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude is required.
  • Proficiency in either Hydratec CAD programs or AutoSPRINK is required.
  • NICET Certification is a plus.
  • Ability to conduct field surveys alone or with others to obtain proper dimensions and information.
  • Ability to travel to job sites by plane or vehicle.
  • Strategic thinking, sound decision-making, and ability to produce accurate and timely results.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with employees and management at all levels.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to sit, climb, reach, and use hands and fingers to handle and move objects.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, hear, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Physical strength rating is classified as light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close acuity, depth perception, peripheral vision, and color vision.
  • May be exposed to a wide range of environmental conditions including indoors, outdoors, extreme temperatures, fumes, odors, toxic conditions, dust, poor ventilation, humidity, loud noises, vibrations, and wet conditions.
  • May require the use of arm, eye, feet, head, leg, skin, hearing, and/or respiratory protection.
  • Operation of a computer keyboard, telephone, copier/fax machine, drawing/drafting materials, hand calculator, and manual hand tools may be required.
  • Understanding of addition, subtraction, simple and advanced math (Calculus, Algebra, & Geometry), simple drawings, technical reports, technical instructions, layout work, simple memos, and business letters is required.
  • Ability to write or present simple memos, summaries, business letters, and technical reports.
