Fire Service Trainer - Part Time

About the role

The Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute (KFRTI), a unit of KU Lifelong and Professional Education, was created in 1949 by the Kansas legislature to train and credential Kansas firefighters. The Institute delivers hundreds of training and certification events annually across the state, serving fire departments and firefighters through a “traveling instruction service.”

This position instructs a variety of fire service programs and courses, serving as lead instructor, assistant instructor, or safety officer (if qualified). The role involves coordinating with program coordinators and managers to deliver KFRTI training programs.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an instructor or safety officer (if qualified) for KFRTI programs and courses.
• Coordinate scheduled courses with the lead instructor to ensure a safe learning environment for students.
• Collaborate with other instructors during multi-training program deliveries.
• Adhere to the KFRTI Instructional Methodology during course delivery activities.
• Manage safety and mitigate risk during training delivery.
• Represent KFRTI and KU professionally, respectfully, and in a customer-friendly manner.
• Assist as an evaluator at KFRTI Certification Testing sites (20%).
• Drive KFRTI non-commercial vehicles and deliver non-commercial trailers and equipment; must have a valid CDL to drive or transport commercial equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or their designee (10%).

Requirements

• High school diploma plus five years of progressive experience conducting/providing fire service training.
• Incident Command System Training: ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
• IFSAC and/or Pro Board NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II certification.
• IFSAC and/or Pro Board NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I certification.
• Two years of fire and emergency services instructional experience (80 hours per year).
• IFSAC and/or Pro Board Certification in the subject(s) to be taught, if applicable.
• Physical ability to perform tasks associated with instruction and evaluation processes.

Preferred Qualifications

• IFSAC and/or Pro Board (or FDSO) Certification or National Fire Academy course completion for NFPA 1521 Fire Department Safety Officer Certification.
• IFSAC and/or Pro Board NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II certification.
• Three years of fire and emergency services instructional experience (80 hours per year).
• Consistent record of positive course and instructor evaluations from students.
• Demonstrated willingness to stay apprised of current, relevant research data and evolving best practices for subject areas.
• IFSAC and/or Pro Board NFPA 1403 Live Fire Instructor certification, International Society of Fire Service Instructors Live Fire Training Instructor credential, or KFRTI KS Live Fire Instructor course.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree.

Pay

$26.40 per hour
