About the role

The Maritime Technology Instructor position is open at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon. This 174-day faculty position offers opportunities for summer teaching and the chance to make a meaningful impact in a scenic, historic coastal community.

Primary & Secondary Schooling (K-12)

  • Design and deliver engaging classroom and laboratory instruction in Fire Science and Maritime Fire Science.
  • Provide instruction through various modalities, including live, online, hybrid, and HyFlex formats.
  • Conduct training sessions in the MERTS Fire Science labs, Fire Response and Research Center (Burn Building), and in field environments.
  • Be available for instruction during flexible hours, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop, assess, and revise curriculum, learning outcomes, and program goals, ensuring compliance with FESHE standards.
  • Evaluate student performance using appropriate assessment tools and assign grades per college policies.
  • Facilitate student evaluations of teaching effectiveness.

Accidents & Disasters

  • Advise up to 20 students each term pursuing certificates or degrees in emergency services, fire science, or maritime science.
  • Participate in academic policy development, committee work, and college service activities as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Maintain regular office hours to support student success.
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance of fire training facilities and equipment in collaboration with the Fire Science Instructional Assistant.
  • Promote Fire Science and Maritime Fire Science programs through community outreach, recruitment events, and regional advisory committee meetings (minimum three annually).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) years of verifiable professional experience in the fire science field; OR seven (7) years of professional work experience in fire science.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Physically capable of instructing while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for extended periods.
  • Candidates hired without an associate’s degree must earn one within three years of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Affiliate degree in Fire Science.
  • Industry certifications such as: NFPA Firefighter I or equivalent, Instructor I, Apparatus Operator, ICS 100, 200, 700, 800, USCG/NMC Approved Basic or Advanced Maritime Firefighting.
  • Experience or training in maritime firefighting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Instructional methods that support student achievement in fire science education.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Effective presentation and written communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as electronic scheduling, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and word processing.
  • Ability to design and implement performance-based assessment tools.
  • Experience using online learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).

  • Develop valid and reliable student assessments.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Manage time, prioritize tasks, and organize workload efficiently.

Working Conditions

  • The Position Requires Tolerance Of Fire Simulation Conditions, Including Work & Labor Issues.
  • Climbing stairs and operating firefighting equipment safely.
  • Wearing full fire gear and SCBA for extended periods.
  • Working in dark, smoky, or heated environments.
  • Handling heavy water hoses and performing under physically demanding conditions.
