Fire Protection Technician, Junior
Job Summary
This is an entry level position to become a qualified member of the Fire Protection Department. Fire Protection performs the following functions: Fire Brigade, Hazmat Team, and Confined Space Rescue, and the day-to-day implementation of fire prevention activities in an industrial setting.
Job Description
- Pass an initial and annual physical examination and an annual physical ability test to verify capability to perform job related tasks in accordance with Federal and State requirements.
- Understand and adhere to Cook Nuclear Plant procedures.
- Be able to pass all initial and on-going testing/training to complete and maintain Fire Responder qualifications.
- Conduct Fire Protection Program inspections and surveillances. These will include but are not limited to Fire Prevention Walkdowns related to Control of Combustible Materials and Hot Work Programs that ensure compliance with the Fire Protection Program.
- Conduct Fire Protection Equipment Impairment Reviews to determine potential scheduling conflicts, appropriate isolation boundaries and compensatory requirements.
- Perform inspections and maintain emergency response equipment.
- Computer input and data manipulation will be required.
- Undertake other responsibilities, as assigned.
- Complete On the Job Training (OJT) and Task Performance Evaluations (TPE) within a pre-determined period to obtain the necessary qualifications to become a Fire Protection Technician.

- Possess effective writing and verbal communication skills.
- Perform duties independently - once qualifications are granted - in a variety of environments.
Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Michigan Fire Fighter’s Training Council (MFFTC) Firefighter I &II or equivalent
- An associate’s degree in a related technical field
- Certification in a related technical field
Experience
- At least one year of firefighting experience
- Two years of work experience in a related technical field
- Valid driver’s license required
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
- Michigan Fire Fighter’s Training Council (MFFTC) Firefighter I &II certification or equivalent
- Confined Space Rescue training/certification
- Hazmat Operations and/or Hazmat Technician certification
- EMS training/license
Physical Demand Level
The Physical Demand Level for this job is: H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
