Fire Protection - Service Layout Technician

About the role

Provide excellent service to customers by assisting the Senior Service Designer, service design staff, and Service Manager. Work within NFPA standards to create and draft sprinkler designs while achieving annual company objectives and personal performance goals.

Responsibilities

  • Complete sprinkler drawings as detailed in the most current NFPA standards documentation.
  • Identify building construction types as specified in NFPA standards.
  • Determine appropriate hazard protection types.
  • Work within project budgets and coordinate with other trades on non-complex projects.
  • Resolve coordination problems and design projects, including pipe cutting with appropriate fittings.
  • Select all required materials for installation.
  • Operate the current version of AutoCAD and its tools to coordinate pipe drawings, heads, hangers, and other sprinkler components.
  • Conduct field surveys alone or with others to obtain all necessary dimensions and information.
  • Project hours, installation, and field survey results accurately.
  • Produce drawings, hydraulic calculations, material pick-offs, and material submittals that meet industry quality standards.
  • Develop complete material submittals that meet industry standards.
  • Complete project paperwork, such as test papers, insurance permits, and punch lists.
  • Identify what is in contract vs. what is not and alert appropriate personnel in writing.
  • Troubleshoot and identify potential problems before they manifest.
  • Order all materials necessary to complete a project.
  • Communicate with customers in face-to-face meetings to provide accurate, thorough information and leave a positive impression of the company.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of all applicable fire codes, including NFPA 13.
  • Serve as project leader, directing team members to complete projects efficiently and accurately.
  • Provide regular, complete, and professional status reports to the Service Manager.
  • Collaborate with other departments to service customers.
  • Work toward achieving the company’s annual objectives and personal performance goals.
  • Operate in compliance with the company’s safety practices at all times.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience in Fire Protection design.
  • Engineering background is a plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Hydratec CAD, and stock listing programs.
  • NICET Certification is a plus.
  • Positive attitude and ability to think strategically, make sound decisions, and produce accurate and timely results.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with employees and management at multiple levels.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow up on tasks and assignments in a timely manner.
