Fire Protection Engineer 2/3 (All Shifts)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Engineering Services - Fire Protection Engineering (ES-FPE) group is the central fire protection engineering and program support entity for the Lab’s nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. We are seeking Fire Protection Engineers (Nuclear Facilities Engineers) to provide oversight of activities at LANL Plutonium Facilities and nuclear facilities operations, offer subject matter guidance, review designs, inspect construction, and manage fire hazards and risks. This position may be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the candidate’s skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations.
• Support construction projects, including plan review and approval.
• Oversee Lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance.
• Manage fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing, and maintenance oversight.
• Prepare equivalencies and exemptions, and develop equivalencies/exemptions to DOE Directives, building codes, and NFPA codes.
• Conduct technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.

Additional responsibilities for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3:

• Sustain and monitor fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs.
• Implement facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance programs.
• Provide mentoring and technical leadership to staff.
• Interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals.
• Maintain Laboratory fire protection engineering and maintenance standards.
• Review and recommend actions on fire protection and loss prevention issues for the Laboratory.
• Represent the Division and Laboratory to internal customers, external agencies, and community organizations.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to perform detailed technical reviews of facility design documents (e.g., designs, plans, submittals, project specs) and provide effective, actionable comments.
• Advanced experience in communicating compliance concerns verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnel.
• Expertise in design or plan review of fire protection and life safety features of buildings and fire protection systems, or experience in documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes.
• Proven leadership in supporting and mentoring junior engineering staff.

Additional requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3:

• Demonstrated leadership aptitude with a focus on professional customer service and regulatory compliance.
• Experience evaluating fire protection needs, concerns, and requirements to solve complex problems through creative problem-solving and appropriate compromise.
• Experience developing processes, programs, or project documentation to incorporate fire protection or life safety objectives and criteria.

Qualifications

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Skills

• Active Q Clearance.
• Familiarity with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards as they relate to fire protection.
• Certification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Plans Examiner, and/or Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA or ICC).
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
• Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected risks (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets or AXA XL property risk guidelines.
• Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and nuclear facilities. (Nuclear/radiological experience is desired but not required.)
• Reactor or nonreactor nuclear facility experience.
• Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles.

Pay

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: $106,400 - $176,000

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: $128,000 - $215,900

Schedule

This position requires 24/7 coverage, involving a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of management based on facility needs.
