Fire Inspector

Salary: $31.20 - $44.84 per hour, commensurate with experience.

About the role

Perform quality inspections and plans examinations on all new and existing buildings, as referenced in the North Carolina Fire Code. The employee will contribute to improving life safety by obtaining compliance with applicable codes, local ordinances, and accepted standards.

Responsibilities

• Verify the proper maintenance of fire protection equipment.
• Enforce occupancy requirements.
• Report violations and prepare written warning notices.
• Make recommendations for eliminating hazards.
• Reference code violations to other enforcement agencies.
• Initiate legal action necessary to achieve code compliance when required.
• Inspect the storage and use of explosive or flammable material.
• Issue operational permits.
• Review plans for approval of construction to ensure compliance with adopted codes and standards.

Requirements

• All applicants must possess or prequalify for a Standard Level I or Probationary Level II North Carolina Fire Inspector Certification through the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
• A NC Standard Level III Fire Inspector Certification is preferred; however, a NC Standard Level I or Probationary Level II Fire Inspector Certification is required.
• Certifications must be up to date and valid prior to hiring consideration.

• Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
• Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
• Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.

Sensory Requirements

• Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, and tabulating data.
• Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and/or noises, which could result in stress, fatigue, or strain.
• Comprehensive understanding of written information in work-related documents.
• Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment with:

• Moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions.
