Fire Detection Service Technician

About the role
This skilled position involves troubleshooting and repairing installed systems, including panel repair/reprogram, device replacement/repair, resolving low voltage circuit troubles, and system testing. You will organize and effectively utilize technical resources, information, material, and support to assure efficient execution of all assigned tasks. The role requires programming fire alarm, security, and access control system panels, with experience in CCTV, IT, and IP networks being a plus.
Responsibilities
- Receive service calls from the Service Resource Center, including a brief description of equipment/system malfunctions.
- Contact customer representatives to ascertain equipment/systems problems.
- Diagnose problems and perform service and repairs on electronic fire alarm systems and other related building system products at customer sites.
- Follow prescribed troubleshooting procedures and refer to technical manuals, part manuals, change notices, bulletins, and modification notices to repair equipment.
- Service, troubleshoot, and install various manufacturers’ Fire & Life Safety systems, including SimplexGrinnell.
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications, software/systems, programs, schematics, and operational product manuals.
- Exhibit excellent customer service skills by consistently communicating with district staff and customers to ensure satisfaction.
- Complete Service Acknowledgements with proper coding through communication devices such as smartphones and laptop computers.
- Obtain customer signatures upon completion of service call assignments.
- Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation.
- Train or mentor others on the service team.
- Provide customers with high-level service to solve building inefficiencies and resolve service-related items.
- Act as a trusted advisor, offering solutions and outcomes at the time of service.
- Complete and submit all required task-related, activity, productivity, and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Perform on-call and after-hours work as required by customer needs.
- Provide recommendations and solutions to ensure facilities run efficiently, including upselling opportunities.
- Provide quotes to support recommendations and solutions.
- Maintain truck inventory to ensure timely response to customer needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 5+ years of documented experience in low voltage electrical systems, including Fire/Life Safety systems, Access Control, Nurse Call, and Paging systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, submittals, and operational/product manuals.
- Knowledge of test equipment, including multi-meter, digital analyzer, and commissioning devices.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Capable of performing physical labor, including carrying and moving equipment and tools up to 50-70 lbs.
- Able to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions such as climbing ladders, scaffolding, and high lift equipment up to 40 feet, working within ducts, crawl spaces, and above ceilings.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, to meet customer requirements.
- Overnight travel may be required.
- Demonstrate a high level of customer service.
- Ability to adhere to, implement, and follow safety guidelines and procedures at all times.
- Strong organizational skills, positive attitude, and ability to learn quickly.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and driving record that meets company requirements.
- Retain any licenses required by National, State, and Local codes.
- Must be able to pass a background check and obtain an IL Perc card.
Qualifications
Preferred: NICET Level II certification.
Pay
Hiring hourly range: $29.13 - $40.09 (determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market alignment).
