Fire Assay Technician - Minerals
About the role
Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions, is seeking a Fire Assay Technician to join its Minerals team in Kershaw, SC. This role involves processing client samples through the laboratory Fire Assay facility, ensuring accurate and safe testing according to established procedures.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all sampling, testing, and analysis are conducted safely and accurately to maintain consistent quality standards
- Participate in daily pre-start meetings, shift handovers, and Safety meetings
- Prepare samples using various digestion, Fire assay, and fusion methods, testing in accordance with laboratory work instructions and test methods with appropriate PPE
- Accurately reconcile samples and maintain the chain of custody
- Immediately report any anomalies to the supervisor/manager
- Undertake analysis of samples in accordance with documented Intertek laboratory procedures, demonstrating competency to work alone and unassisted as appropriate
- Develop and demonstrate the ability to multi-task and self-manage multiple jobs at once to maximize time utilization
- Complete work in a timely manner by following priorities set, including picking up of samples, sample preparation, and instrumentation duties
- Conduct routine weekly jobs about the laboratory involving manual labor, such as cleaning work surfaces, safety cabinets, and equipment
- Sample preparation duties such as racking of samples onto and off trolleys and shelving, subsampling, sieving, and compositing of samples
- Weigh samples for various analyses
- Input results into the Intertek laboratory information management system: MINLIMS
- Prepare reports and present them for quality control checking by the Laboratory Supervisor and Lab Manager
- Comply with all work instructions, work procedures, safe work procedures, safe work instructions, and lawful directions provided by the supervisor
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in Fire Assay Technician role
- Ability to safely perform manual handling tasks, including standing for extended periods and regularly lifting items weighing approximately 50 pounds, in accordance with safe work practices
- Effective verbal and written communication skills suitable for a laboratory and production environment
- Capacity to work independently once trained, while managing a fluctuating workload and changing priorities
- Strong practical problem-solving skills with sound mechanical aptitude relevant to sample preparation equipment
- Valid driver’s license and reliable driving record is required
Qualifications
- Associate's Degree preferred
- Three years of experience in a Fire Assay Technician role
Skills
Strong practical problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, and ability to work independently and manage a fluctuating workload are essential. Proficiency in sample preparation equipment and adherence to safety protocols are also crucial.
