About the role
Join us as a Fire Assay Technician within the Fire Assay department. Your primary responsibilities include fluxing, fusion, cupellation, and checking fusion quality to identify deficiencies and initiate re-assay processes under minimum supervision.
Responsibilities
- Manage and set up crucibles for sample preparation;
- Perform fusion and cupellation processes using furnace tools;
- Adjust chemical composition of flux to achieve quality fusion;
- Organize workload according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;
- Follow up on rush priority workloads;
- Communicate safety, quality, and operational issues within the department and branch;
- Adhere to safe work procedures and standard operating procedures;
- Train new employees;
- Maintain and organize departmental inventory;
- Follow equipment and workstation cleaning and maintenance schedules;
- Store hazardous waste in accordance with regulated health and safety procedures;
- Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Comply with established safety regulations and ALS health and safety policies;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Familiarity with all fire assay methods and their respective digestion volumes and finish methods;
- Strong analytical and mechanical skills;
- Organized and highly motivated individual;
- Detail-oriented individual with strong commitment to quality;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Ability to handle a high volume of work and time-critical issues;
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision;
- Ability to organize workflow and plan to meet deadlines;
- Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal);
- Intermediate MS Office skills, specifically MS Excel, Word, and Outlook;
- Safety-oriented;
- Knowledge of GEMS required.
Qualifications
- Recognized Diploma or Degree in Science required, with a concentration in Chemistry or Chemical Sciences preferred;
- Minimum of 2 years laboratory Fire Assay experience in a production-oriented environment required.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs;
- Ability to work within a hot and dusty environment;
- Clean shaven for personal protective equipment (respirator);
- Ability to stand and/or sit for up to 8 hours per day;
- Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks;
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, including periodic sedentary work.
