Fire Apparatus Engineer

Regular full-time position within the Pala Fire Department.

About the role

Under general supervision, respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property. Operate, maintain, and ensure the readiness of fire vehicles and pumping equipment. Provide first aid and lifesaving assistance, and perform related duties as required.

Responsibilities

• Safely drive fire apparatus to emergency scenes and operate pumping engines to boost water pressure from hydrants or other sources.
• Calculate correct pump pressure using hydraulic theory and mathematics to ensure required water flow at nozzles.
• Perform routine maintenance: clean pumps, wash apparatus, make minor repairs, and service equipment.
• Inspect and maintain hoses, equipment, and pump motors.
• Position fire apparatus strategically during emergencies to ensure operational effectiveness and safety.
• Perform firefighting duties, rescue operations, and lifesaving tasks using ladders and resuscitation equipment.
• Inspect public establishments for fire safety compliance and test fire protection systems.
• Examine storage and handling of flammable liquids and hazardous materials; issue compliance orders.
• Respond to complaints, provide information, and assist in maintaining the fire station and grounds.
• Conduct daily inspections of equipment readiness, flow-test hydrants, and study tribal geography and hydrant locations.
• Administer first aid, operate rescue equipment, and use foam/additive proportioners.
• Document training modalities in the absence or direction of the Fire Captain.
• Engage in public information activities, maintain inventories, recommend equipment purchases, and uphold physical fitness.
• Operate Tribal vehicles as directed.
• Assume supervisory/leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Fire Captain.

Requirements

• Current knowledge of firefighting principles, methods, techniques, and strategies.
• Understanding of hazardous materials, fire prevention procedures, and related codes.
• Familiarity with hydraulic principles, construction engineering, personnel supervision, and training.
• Knowledge of tribal geography and water systems.
• Ability to prepare concise written and oral reports, conduct inspections, and perform investigations.
• Ability to calculate hydraulic engineering problems under emergency conditions.
• Skill in performing emergency first aid at the EMT or higher level and reacting quickly under pressure.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships.

Qualifications

Any combination of training, education, and experience demonstrating the required knowledge and ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying background includes experience as a Fire Apparatus Engineer (FAE) and completion of coursework in fire science or a related field.

• High school diploma, G.E.D., or high school proficiency certificate (advanced education highly desirable).
• Valid Class C California Driver’s License with Firefighter Endorsement (Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License highly desirable).

Certifications

• State of California EMT-B or Paramedic (San Diego County accreditation required upon appointment).
• AHA Health Care Provider CPR (all candidates) and AHA ACLS Certification (paramedic licensed only).
• California State Board of Fire Services Firefighter I certification (Firefighter II highly desirable).
• California State Board of Fire Services Driver/Operator 1A & 1B certification or equivalent.
• Completion of BlueCard® 50-hour online training within 90 days of hire (department provided).
• Completion of 24-hour post-50-hour training at a Certified Training Center (CTC) within one year of hire (department provided).

Pay

$96,000 annually.

Working Conditions

• Environmental Conditions: Exposure to harsh or toxic substances; required use of protective apparel (goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes, oxygen breathing apparatus). Work at considerable heights, physical exertion, and uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods. Exposure to communicable diseases (e.g., HIV, HBV, HCV, tuberculosis, meningococcal meningitis, parasites).
• Physical Conditions: Maintain physical condition necessary for arduous work, including frequent bending, turning, reaching, grasping, kneeling, standing, sitting, and walking. Moderate to heavy pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
