About the role

The Fire Alarm Apprentice assists the Fire Alarm Superintendent in the installation of fire alarm systems. Essential duties include assisting with installation of conduit, low voltage wiring, control panels, and other fire alarm equipment; keeping tools available and in serviceable condition; cleaning job sites; carrying equipment; learning and developing knowledge of fire alarm and special hazards installation; reading and learning NFPA 72 and NEC 70; understanding and following SFS's Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures; participating in Toolbox talks; complying with SFS's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements; and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Fire Alarm Superintendent and/or project lead with installation of conduit, low voltage wiring, control panels, and other fire alarm equipment.
  • Keep tools available and in serviceable working condition on job site.
  • Absorb and develop working knowledge of fire alarm and special hazards installation under various teaching practices.
  • Read and learn NFPA 72 and NEC 70 in an effort to obtain NICET Certification and skill set needed to advance and become a Fire Alarm Technician.
  • Understand and follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures.
  • Participate in weekly Toolbox talks.
  • Comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.
  • Develop efficient time management skills, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize initiatives and business goals.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • Collaborate with all levels of employees.
  • Show strong diligence and accuracy in communication.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 0 years Fire Life Safety Industry experience, specifically in Fire Alarm, required.
  • 1+ years of professional computer skills.
  • Desire and ability to learn the tactful skills allowing promotion to a Fire Alarm & Security Technician.
  • Must be able to comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.
  • Efficient time management skills, developed organizational skills, and ability to prioritize initiatives and business goals.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Collaborator and ability to work with all levels of employees.
  • Strong diligence and accuracy in communication.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required.
  • Must be able to travel 90% of the time, locally.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Physical Requirements: Frequently bend, ascend and descend step stools, ladders and stairs, kneel, lift up to 50 lbs, reach above and below shoulders, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work Environment: Regularly works outside, exposed to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards and noise. Occasional work indoors in an office setting, work alone and with others.
  • Physical Requirements: Balance, crouch, drive, lift over 50 lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.
