About the role

The Substation Apprentice will perform the work associated with and including, but not limited to, the construction, modification, installation, maintenance, and refit of all substation components. These may include transformers, breakers, relay panels, buss assemblies, and other substation components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform installation of all substation equipment
  • Follow the instructions of the foreman/leadman
  • Perform duties from aerial lifts or work platforms
  • Mechanical background of construction of some nature
  • Must be able to read and understand technical information contained in manuals and blueprints
  • Must possess a willingness to learn and accept more responsibility with experience
  • Must show up for work ready and fit for duty
  • Must be willing to work in the extremities of nature, i.e., extreme heat, rain, cold
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management

Work Environment

  • Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration
  • Exposure to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites including working in the heat and inclement weather
  • Noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud

Physical Demands

  • Frequently sits, climbs or balances, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls
  • Lifts heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds and carries that weight a minimum of 20 feet on a regular, recurring basis
  • Uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination
  • Requires the ability to climb up to and onto elevated equipment and stand for long periods of time
  • Requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs
  • Excellent stamina required
  • Must have excellent hearing, seeing long distances and differentiating between colors, and have depth perception

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. This position requires the frequent need for overtime work as driven by customer needs and storms. There may also be unpredictable hours associated with emergencies, (outages, storm recoveries, etc.).

Travel

  • The position primarily works out-of-town during the workweek which requires weekly overnight travel
  • Out of area and extended travel is common and dictated by customer demand and power outages related to various natural disasters
  • Must be available to travel for work routinely and with very little notice

Key Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Class A CDL or the ability to secure within 90 days

Key Nice-to-Haves

  • Technical degrees or higher
  • Specialty skills (welding, heavy equipment operation, crane operators - NCCCO)
  • Experience working in a substation
