About the Role
The Fire Alarm Apprentice assists the Fire Alarm Superintendent in the installation of fire alarm systems. This role is ideal for individuals looking to begin a rewarding career in fire protection and develop the skills needed to advance to a Fire Alarm Technician.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Fire Alarm Superintendent and project lead with the installation of conduit, low voltage wiring, control panels, and other fire alarm equipment.
- Maintain tools in serviceable working condition on the job site.
- Assist in cleaning the job site, tools, and equipment.
- Transport equipment, such as ladders, tools, and replacement parts from the vehicle or laydown area to the required location.
- Develop a working knowledge of fire alarm and special hazards installation through training and practice.
- Study NFPA 72 and NEC 70 to obtain NICET Certification and advance to a Fire Alarm Technician role.
- Follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous Communication program, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in weekly Toolbox talks and know the location of all safety documentation on each project.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- 0 years of Fire Life Safety Industry experience, specifically in Fire Alarm (entry-level role).
- 1+ years of professional computer skills.
- Desire and ability to learn skills necessary for promotion to Fire Alarm & Security Technician.
- Must comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, including customer-specific requirements based on contractual agreements.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel locally 90% of the time.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Frequently bend, ascend/descend step stools, ladders, and stairs; kneel; lift up to 50 lbs; reach above and below shoulders; stand and walk for extended periods.
- Occasionally balance, crouch, drive, kneel, lift over 50 lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.
- Must be able to see in color, close and far distances, peripheral, depth, and adjust focus.
- Regularly work outside and be exposed to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise.
- Occasionally work indoors in an office setting, alone, or with others.
- Consistently wear all appropriate personal protective equipment as required by company safety policies.
