About the role

A Tax Experienced Manager, State and Local Tax advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, business development, and applying new tax policies. It also includes collaborating with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Researches complex situations requiring tax research, analyzes findings, and prepares detailed reports.
  • Conducts detailed reviews of tax returns, responds to notices from state taxing authorities, and provides exam support.
  • Drafts tax memorandums, tax opinions, and other documentation, applying various tax consulting sub-specialties.
  • Manages engagements, ensures tax engagement letters are adopted, and manages client expectations.
  • Takes clients before tax authorities on contested issues, negotiates settlements, and drafts technical memoranda.
  • Utilizes tax-related software such as GoSystems and tax research databases.
  • Provides technical client service to multi-state companies, negotiates settlements, and represents clients in audits.
  • Develops new or improved tax strategies, suggests marketing approaches, and assists in the research of potential tax strategies.
  • Reviews tax implications to identify alternative courses of action and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or personnel.
  • Supervises the workload of SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, trains them on relevant tax software, evaluates their performance, and provides performance feedback.
  • Acts as a Career Advisor to SALT Senior Associates and Associates, as appropriate.

Requirements

Required: Bachelors degree, Six (6) or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience, experience supervising tax professionals, experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, CPA certification or other relevant certification.

PREFERRED: Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., experience with tax research databases and software, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree, required
  • Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., preferred
  • Six (6) or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience, required
  • Experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis, required
  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred
  • Experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, preferred
  • CPA certification or other relevant certification, preferred
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior analytical and research skills
  • Solid organizational skills, especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details
  • Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards to ensure effective and efficient delivery of tax services
  • Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause / effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential tax issues
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools, preferred
