About the role

The Real Estate Tax Technician supports the City’s assessment and collection of real estate taxes by performing research, account maintenance, billing support, and customer service activities within the Real Estate unit.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on real estate tax accounts to verify data accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
  • Processes account updates, corrections, and maintenance activities in accordance with policies and applicable tax codes.
  • Supports preparation, issuance, and reconciliation of real estate tax bills and notices.
  • Reviews and processes delinquent real estate tax payments and assists with desk audits as needed.
  • Investigates account issues and collaborates with internal staff to resolve tax-related conflicts.
  • Provides standard information to taxpayers in-person, by phone, and via written correspondence regarding real estate tax assessments, billing, and payments.
  • Serves as second-line support for escalated Real Estate customer service tickets, ensuring accurate, timely, and courteous resolution.
  • Aids taxpayers with relief program inquiries and required documentation, ensuring eligibility factors are met.
  • Explains tax obligations and deadlines.
  • Records, Reporting, and Administrative Support:
    • Prepares public records, tax notices, and legal/court documentation related to real estate taxes.
    • Maintains accurate digital and physical files, ensuring compliance with retention and confidentiality standards.
    • Provides administrative support within the Real Estate unit, including data entry, document processing, and general clerical tasks.
    • Assists with generating reports related to collections, assessments, outstanding taxes, and unit performance metrics.

Qualifications, Special Certifications And Licenses

  • Knowledge (some Combination Of The Following): Basic math, accounting, business, and financial policies; City and State codes; Computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite; Electronic databases and related software applications such as MUNIS, Clear, TACS, and Accurint; Office equipment such as a multi-line phone; Personal property tax codes and collection tax laws.
  • Skills (some Combination Of The Following): Assessments; Collections; Oral and written communication; Customer service; Conducting research; Cash handling; Data entry.
  • Abilities (some Combination Of The Following): Analyze information; Pay attention to detail; Think critically; Follow directions and established procedures.

Minimum Training And Experience

  • A High School Diploma or GED.
  • An Associate's degree preferred.
  • Two years of accounting support experience such as processing payments, providing direct customer service, calculating funds owed, and investigating/collecting delinquent payments.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
