A little bit about us

Spark Financial Advisors is a fee-only, independent RIA serving high-income women, dual-career couples, and business owners in Richmond, Williamsburg, and virtually nationwide. We believe financial planning is so much more than math, and we show up for our clients accordingly, through the big milestones, the hard seasons, and everything in between. We don't sell products. We build plans, build trust, and build relationships that last. We're proud to serve clients from a variety of backgrounds and are LGBTQIA+ affirming.

A little bit about the role

  • Working the Full Planning Process
  • Preparing and delivering comprehensive financial plans with limited supervision, including document gathering and review, data entry, plan build-out, and troubleshooting.
  • Leading or supporting client meeting preparation, presentation, and follow-up with clear, concise meeting notes and timely action item completion.
  • Conducting tax analysis, including Roth conversion modeling using Holistiplan, and supporting year-end tax planning for clients.
  • Reviewing insurance policies, estate documents, tax returns, and investment accounts to surface planning opportunities and flag issues.
  • Understanding and applying Spark’s investment philosophy; supporting portfolio rebalancing in alignment with our approach.

Growing and Owning Client Relationships

  • Attending client meetings alongside Lead Advisors; over time, taking the lead on select client relationships as trust and capacity grow.
  • Communicating complex financial topics in approachable, jargon-free language, written and verbal.
  • Managing ongoing client requests and questions with responsiveness and follow-through that reflects Spark’s service standards.
  • Building relationships with a diverse client base, including high-income women, dual-career couples, and solopreneurs.

Running a Clean, Compliant Practice

  • Using the CRM (Advyzon) and financial planning software (RightCapital) with discipline: if it’s not documented, it didn’t happen.
  • Managing your client workload like a portfolio of projects: organized, proactive, and never letting anything fall through the cracks.
  • Taking compliance seriously and upholding the highest standard of accuracy and professional conduct.

We are excited about you because you...

  • Have at least 2 years of financial planning experience and know the planning process like the back of your hand.
  • Have passed the CFP® Exam. (Candidates currently scheduled to sit in July 2026 will be considered.)
  • Bring a strong working knowledge of retirement planning, investing principles, taxation, Roth conversions, 529 plans, insurance, employee benefits, and the basics of estate planning.
  • Have experience with financial planning software such as RightCapital, eMoney, MoneyGuidePro, or similar.
  • Are proficient in, or ready to quickly learn, Advyzon, Holistiplan, Schwab, Fidelity, or Altruist platforms.
  • Can translate technical financial concepts into plain language that resonates with clients who are smart, busy, and not finance people.
  • Are detail-oriented and process-driven: you don’t rely on memory, you rely on systems.
  • Do what you say you’re going to do, every time, and follow up without being asked.
  • Are warm, polished, and personable. Clients feel immediately at ease with you, whether you’re explaining a Roth conversion or navigating a hard conversation about a financial gap.
  • Take personal accountability seriously and raise your hand early when something’s not right.
  • Are curious about the full picture of a client’s financial life, not just the numbers, but the values behind them.

Bonus skills (appreciated but not required)

  • Experience with stock compensation, small business owner planning, or 401(k) plan administration.
  • Background in tax (CPA or tax practice) with a desire to move into financial planning.
  • Familiarity with Kinder Life Planning or other values-based planning methodologies.
  • Experience at a fee-only or NAPFA-member RIA.

To be successful at Spark, you must:

  • Act with Integrity | We do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
  • Listen Deeply | True understanding starts with truly hearing. We go beyond the surface of what's being said to uncover what's really meant, asking better questions and making space for every voice to be heard.
  • Treat People with Respect | People are at the heart of everything we do. We show up for one another and for our clients with empathy, humility, and genuine care, honoring every person's time, perspective, and dignity.
  • Bring a Can Do Attitude | Obstacles are just opportunities in disguise. We bring energy, optimism, and a solutions-first mindset to every challenge, refusing to be stopped by what isn't possible and focusing on what is.

Reasons it pays to work for Spark (in addition to the pay itself)

  • 10% bonus target
  • 401(k) contribution of 4% and profit sharing
  • $250/month tax-free qualifying medical expense reimbursement (QSEHRA)
  • Group Long-term and Short-term Disability Insurance
  • Three weeks of vacation plus all stock market holidays
