About the role
The Financial Health Counselor provides financial education guidance that addresses the overall financial health of patients, team members, and the community. They assist consumers in developing action steps and goals, offering support and advice to help consumers meet short-term needs while working toward long-range goals.
Responsibilities
- Assess clients' overall financial situation by reviewing income, assets, debts, expenses, credit reports, or other financial information.
- Work with patients, clients, and team members to develop realistic action steps and goals, and educate clients on money management skills.
- Contact consumers in accordance with the department follow-up procedure and requested management.
- Maintain current on Department of Financial institutions (DFI) rules, Council on accreditation standards, and National Foundations for Credit Counseling (NFCC).
- Develop and maintain working knowledge and strong collaborative relationships with community agencies who can serve as potential resource providers.
- Meet counseling performance standards in the counseling department, upholding the time management protocol and guidelines.
- Multi-task, manage multifaceted and administrative functions in providing counseling sessions as applicable and in such areas as phone appointments, outbound call initiative, pilot program projects, and assignments, and third-party co-op initiatives.
Requirements
- Licensed/Registered/Certified: Certified Consumer Credit Counselor certification issued by the National Foundation for Consumer Credit within 6 months, Issued by (Governing Body): National Foundation of Consumer Credit
- Education: Associate's degree in Business or Social work or equivalent experience
- Experience: Typically requires 3+ years of experience in a financial setting
Skills and Abilities
- Team player who can also work independently, excellent communication skills
- Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects
- Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
- Good communication skills; math aptitude; experience with computers and accounting software; familiar with federal and state laws regarding lending, personal finance, and banking practices
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
- Ability to multi-task, manage multifaceted and administrative functions in providing counseling sessions as applicable and in such areas as phone appointments, outbound call initiative, pilot program projects, and assignments and third-party co-op initiatives
