About the role
The Financial Counselor is responsible for meeting with patients/guarantors to seek and apply for healthcare funding and review payment options. Duties include cashiering, customer service, and managing patient accounts.
Responsibilities
- Meet with patients/guarantors for financial counseling and payment options
- Perform cashiering and customer service functions
- Assist patients in completing applications for funding sources
- Calculate patient liabilities and establish payment plans
- Counsels patients/guarantors on financial liability, third-party payer requirements, and outside financial resources
- Analyzes financial and eligibility data to determine potential eligibility for government programs
- Works with contracted vendors/agencies to qualify applicants
- Provides pricing estimates and communicates pre-service patient liability
- May serve as a notary public and liaison for various departments
- Performs cashiering functions and prepares patient accounts for billing
- Provides customer service functions such as responding to inquiries and generating itemized bills
Requirements
- 1 year of experience in a hospital or clinic environment, insurance company, managed care organization, or financial service setting
- Associate’s degree preferred
- Notary public credentials preferred
- Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs, regulations, and application processes
- Working knowledge of medical terminology desirable
- Data entry skills (50-60 keystrokes per minute)
- Basic computer skills preferable
- Accuracy, attentiveness to detail, and time management skills
- Ability to set and organize work priorities and adapt to frequent changes
- Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment
- Knowledge of insurance payer regulations and requirements
- Knowledge of revenue cycle components
- Ability to impact the overall process positively

- Ability to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in a stressful environment
- Comfortable with physical demands, including regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and lifting light weight objects
- Ensures patient safety by authenticating patient identity throughout all essential functions
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations
- Meets or exceeds established customer service, productivity, and quality standards
