Financial Crime Intelligence: Investigations Expert
About the Role
You will be part of Klarna's Financial Crime Intelligence team—an in-house team of experts spanning the full spectrum of case complexity, from routine reviews to the most complex, high-risk investigations. Whether your background is in fast-moving fintech environments or the deeper regulatory rigor of traditional banking, you'll apply that experience to real, high-stakes cases, using expert judgement to determine when escalation, enhanced due diligence, or regulatory reporting is required.
Responsibilities
Your work spans three layers:
- Complex investigations – Own cases too nuanced, layered, or novel for standard processes, documenting rationale to help the team build a shared understanding of investigative boundaries.
- Intelligence – Spot emerging typologies, translate signals into actionable insight, and help the team stay ahead of new fraud and financial crime patterns proactively.
- Enforcement – Turn intelligence into action by influencing transaction monitoring configuration, closing coverage gaps, and ensuring investigative findings improve detection infrastructure beyond individual cases.
Working closely with internal stakeholders, you will help maintain strong investigative controls, support transaction monitoring quality, and ensure Klarna's financial crime framework scales responsibly across global markets.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in AML or financial crime investigations within fintech, banking, payments, law enforcement, or a regulatory/investigative body. Candidates with experience across both fintech and traditional banking are especially encouraged.
- Strong hands-on experience conducting end-to-end transaction monitoring, event-driven investigations, and complex case escalations.
- Proven ability to assess suspicious activity and draft clear, well-supported Suspicious Activity Reports in line with regulatory expectations.
- Solid understanding of AML and financial crime regulations applicable to the US and/or EU, including sanctions and Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) frameworks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to document and explain investigative decisions clearly.
- Comfort operating in a fast-paced environment with evolving financial crime risks and operational priorities.
Qualifications
Bonus points if you also have:
- CAMS, ICA, or equivalent AML certification.
- Experience supporting or overseeing outsourced investigation or transaction monitoring teams.
- Exposure to a range of product types—from traditional banking (e.g., lending, deposits, credit) to emerging products like crypto and investments—and/or AML regulatory reporting experience in the EU/UK.
- Additional languages (German, Swedish, and/or French).
- Experience tuning, testing, or optimizing transaction monitoring/screening tools, or translating investigation-led insights into control or monitoring rule design.
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI-powered tooling in an investigative or compliance context, including comfort with AI-assisted analysis (e.g., case triage, summarization, pattern/typology detection) to improve efficiency across case volumes.
Who You Are
- Preventative, not just reactionary—intelligence and investigations inform systemic improvements, not just individual case closure.
- Treat every case as a data point—ask what’s broken in the system, not just what happened in this instance, and are motivated by insight, not just outcomes.
- Think beyond the case in front of you—comfortable zooming out to spot connections, patterns, or systemic gaps that narrower investigations might miss.
- Share what you find—insights and typologies are surfaced to the team and Compliance/Operations stakeholders, not left in case notes.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and complex judgement calls—high-risk cases rarely come with a clean playbook, and you’re willing to make and defend reasoned decisions without waiting for certainty.
